A man sustained serious burn injuries Tuesday morning when a fire erupted in two vehicles outside a Turlock home.

The fire was reported just after 4 a.m. Tuesday at a home in the 1200 block of Payne Way.

Initially the fire was reported as a working structure fire. The first fire crews to arrive found two vehicles parked outside the residence fully engulfed in flames.

A man came out of the home with significant burn injuries. American Medical Response was on scene and started patient care while a landing zone for an air ambulance was cleared. The man was flown to a burn unit, said Turlock Fire Capt. Jason Bernard.

An aggressive attack was made on the fire to keep it from spreading to the home.

Only two of Turlock's fire engines and a battalion chief were able to dispatch to the call immediately because of multiple medical calls coming in at the same time, Bernard said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

County agencies provided city coverage during the incident.
