Government Relations Council

Meets the 3rd Friday of every month, and is the nexus between members of the Chamber and elected and government officials who, through either legislation or regulation, may impact the bottom line of our members’ businesses.

Economic Development Committee

Meets the 1st Wednesday of every month, and works with local government officials on issues through avenues such as business park expansion, community planning, transportation needs, air services and redevelopment.

Stanislaus Green Team

Meets the 3rd Thursday of every month, and creates a nexus between commerce and environment, searching for regional solutions to challenges facing Stanislaus County. This committee works to assist businesses in “Going Green” to help reduce their costs of doing business, help the environment, and move the Stanislaus County economy forward through sustainability.

Business and Education Committee

A major collaborative initiative between business, education and the nonprofit sector on how we as a Chamber can positively affect workforce within our County for future generations.

Welcome Team

Meets the 3rd Friday of every month and is made up of existing Chamber Members who attend Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies as well as other Chamber events to officially welcome our new members. Team members become acquainted with the businesses visited, exchange business cards, and welcome the newest businesses in our community.

Ambassador Team

Takes place the 3rd Friday of every month, and consists of highly visible and prestigious volunteers who serve as a Chamber’s primary liaison to new and current Chamber members. Ambassadors help educate current members about all the resources, savings and marketing exposure that can be utilized as a Modesto Chamber member.

Inspire Youth Inspire Dreams

The Inspire Youth Inspire Dreams goal is to facilitate each and every student who participates in recognizing his or her interests and discovering the opportunity to build their future in Modesto, CA. This platform will highlight various local businesses across all sectors of business and industry giving students firsthand exposure to the opportunities existing in the field of their individual interest.

Annual Member Choice Awards & Anniversaries

These prestigious awards are determined by Chamber members, Board of Directors and community partner nominations. Recipients are recognized for their contributions of self, time, energy, and resources which created a positive difference for the Chamber and community.

Harvest Luncheon

The Harvest Luncheon brings leaders of agriculture together with our community to celebrate our region’s Ag students and our Regions abundant agricultural offerings. Proceeds from the Harvest Luncheon are used exclusively for the Modesto Chamber of Commerce Voss-Berryhill Modesto Junior College Ag Scholarship Program.

Ag Aware Luncheon

This luncheon generates scholarship funds for our local high school Ag students, while highlighting the programs focused on education in agriculture in our region. Ag Aware funds benefit students in FFA programs at various local high schools.

The Modesto Chamber hosts a family focused festival dedicated to family, food, fitness and fun!

Green Business Sustainability Award Events which provide opportunities to celebrate sustainability efforts and to network with the local businesses who have been certified through our California Green Business Network, Stanislaus Program.

Programs

Women in Business Network

This program meets the 3rd Tuesday of every month and strives to cultivate supportive relationships among businesswomen within our community. They focus on topics such as economic stability, operating a successful business and networking opportunities. They also provide mentorship training.

Tech Connect

Takes place the 2nd Thursday of the month as a networking opportunity focused on leveraging technology to improve business results. The Modesto Chamber of Commerce Tech Connect program partners with Bay Valley Tech and Valley Sierra Small Business Development Center, to bring awareness of Tech efforts and growth in the Central Valley.

Rising Professionals Network

This program meets the 1st Thursday of every month and strives to cultivate supportive relationships among rising professionals. We invite participation with a focus on talent retention and the growth of future leaders through mentorship and engagement with experienced business professionals.

Modesto Chamber Leadership Series

This is a partnership with Leadership Modesto, a program of the Modesto Chamber of Commerce. These sessions provide opportunities for local leaders to share their thoughts, lessons and expertise form their position of leadership. These forums inspire others to become effective leaders.

Chamber University

In partnership with the Modesto Junior College we bring you Chamber University. Our portal offers over 800 courses of development and training. Chamber University empowers you and your staff to take your business to the next level. Our portal is opened to member's, and non-members alike through MJC’s Workforce Development & Lifelong Learning Department.

Business U

Workshops take place the 2nd Wednesday of the month. Business U provides an arena for Business to Businesses learning. Presenters will share their business insight on challenges in the workplace as well as share their expertise gained from their individual experience.

Leadership Modesto Our program fosters the growth and development of new and potential Modesto community leaders. This opportunity provides a dynamic, hands on, ten-month intensive program - which instills the requisite knowledge and understanding of the many facets of community life and leadership. Participants will exchange ideas, grapple with current local and regional issues, and begin the important self-development of place and purpose required to assume leadership roles.

California Green Business Network Stanislaus This program helps businesses lower the cost of doing business through sustainability. By doing so this improves the environment ,wellness of employees and productivity, and shows our community and customers that sustainability is a priority. GO GREEN

The Stanislaus Green Team was launched by the Modesto Chamber of Commerce in November of 2012. The purpose was to create a nexus between commerce and environment, and the desire of the Modesto Chamber to work collaboratively, searching for regional solutions to challenges facing Stanislaus County. Simply put, assisting businesses in Going Green will not only reduce their costs of doing business, but it will also help the environment and move the Stanislaus County economy forward.

The Modesto Chamber of Commerce joined the California Green Business Network and became the first in the county to start this amazing trend of living and working sustainably. The program helps businesses lower the cost of doing business, it’s great for the environment, improves the wellness of employees and productivity, and it shows the community and customers that sustainability is your priority.

This program is free to both members and non-members and offers up to $500 in rebates to offset costs that businesses may encounter in the course of meeting the Green Business standards.

Modesto Junior College: 100 Years and Counting

For the last 100 years, Modesto Junior College has been embedded in the fabric of California’s Central Valley, working to transform students into graduates and helping to write the story of its community. Since 1921, MJC has worked to grow its deep roots throughout the communities it serves by preparing students directly for the workforce or to further their education at a 4-year university.

The President of Modesto Junior College, Dr. Santanu Bandyopadhay’s plans include investments in the future of education through the creation of a Center of Excellence and Teaching and Learning Center, creating partnerships with high schools and universities to increase opportunities for students to attend and complete college without crippling debt and a committed focus to equity by shaping campus support around specific needs of students. Support efforts will include a multi-layered financial aid offering enhanced by private fundraising efforts by the Foundation, increased access to technology as well as food, housing, and mental health support. It is hard to imagine how Modesto

and its college have transformed over the last 100 years: the early days of the college looked quite different from the hustling and bustling campuses of today -- just 61 people made up the first class of students, but the early days are marked by incredible accomplishments. MJC has the distinction of building the very first community college building in California, completed in December of 1923. MJC also saw the state’s first-ever community college transfer to a four-year institution in 1922, when the alumnus transferred to Stanford University.

Today, the college is a proud Hispanic Serving Institution, offering more than 1,600 course sections, two campus locations, and over 725,000 alumni. Throughout the pandemic, the college committed its resources to keep students in school, despite the hardships wrought by COVID-19. MJC distributed more than $3.87 million to lessen the financial burden of college for students throughout the pandemic and expanded the availability of virtual services.

Current trends indicate higher education is expected to change significantly in the years to come. Advancement of instructional technology is expected to result in convergence of on-line and on-campus education modalities. A consumer mindset will result in demands for higher accountability from the students and community. Focus on the employability aspect of education is anticipated to result in the development of micro-certificates. Whichever direction higher education takes, MJC is prepared to serve its community by staying ahead of the trends, as it has done over the last century.

The crack of the bat, cheering crowds and the slap of the ball falling into the glove welcome guests to the Modesto Nuts ballpark.

The 2022 season will see the team play 132 games from from April 8 through Sept. 11. The schedule includes the six-game series format that was introduced in 2021, with the Nuts having all but one Monday off between April and September. The Nuts open at home going up against the San Jose Giants on April 8 for a three-game series. The Nuts are at home on the Fourth of July, hosting the Stockton Ports after playing on the road for Independence Day in 2021.

In total, the 2022 schedule features 25 prime weekend

and holiday games.

The Modesto Nuts Professional Baseball team is the Class A Affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, who made a complete purchase of the team in 2021. The Seattle Mariners have already made some improvements at the stadium, most notably by replacing the infield and laying new sod.

Since our initial partnership in 2016 they have been nothing short of extraordinary and I’m sure our new arrangement will help us grow significantly in the future, said Modesto Nuts General Manager Zach Brockman.

Fans of minor league baseball revel in the ease of getting to know the players in a way that is not always available at major league stadiums. It’s not unusual to see fans talking to their favorite players and getting autographs before a game.

Minor league baseball offers more than just a chance to see new and young players in the early stages of their careers. It’s an opportunity to have some unique fun without having to spend a lot of money.

For our county, I can’t see a more valuable venue in the summer, Brockman said. Everyone can come out and enjoy a baseball game even if you’re not a baseball fan. The majority of our fans who come out probably couldn’t tell you the final score of the game, but they know they had fun and it didn’t break the bank for them.

Modesto in Season

When it comes to Modesto, each season presents a unique opportunity for exploring and having fun.

Modesto offers something for everyone all the time, said Todd Aaronson, the CEO of the Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau. Live music - got that. Parks, playgrounds and family-friendly activities - got that. Great fresh food, live entertainment, nightlife and brew pubs - got that. Fresh produce, fruit, nuts and farm raised butcher items - got lots of that. Outdoor recreation; fishing, hiking, running, cycling, river rafting - got that. Shopping in malls and local boutiques - got that, Places to rest and relax - got that too. And, it’s all literally in the true heart of California, so geting here is easy and you’ll have a great time while not overspending.

Spring

Each spring the almond orchards in and around Modesto turn into an etheral picture of delicate pink and white blossoms blooming in rows upon rows with a back drop of a brilliant blue sky. It’s a favorite photo opportunity for locals and now is a self-guided tour around town.

My wife and I used to take a cruise every year when the blossoms were out, Aaronson said. Most years we’d do it over two different days. Just the two of us for several hours and different routes each year for several years. Then I took a friend of mine from Asheville, North Carolina, who has 50-mile fall foliage views, on a ‘personal cruise’ and he asked ‘Why doesn’t the world know about this...it’s amazing’ and I decided when I had a chance to

create an Almond Blossom Cruise I was going to do it. I joined Visit Modesto in the summer of 2019 and the Visit Modesto team launched the first Cruise in 2020.

Depending on the weather, the blossoms can appear any time between mid-February to late March. The Almond Blossom Crusie has an app that guides guests along a specific tour route. Summer

Summer time in Modesto is all about classic cars and the annual Graffiti Festival. All summer long car enthusiasts and those with just a casual interest can check out car shows from many car clubs and service organizations. The granddaddy of all the graffiti activities is the Graffiti Festival with a car show and parade that draws in thousands of visitors. The event is conducted by the North Modesto Kiwanis Club, whose members run all the events. All proceeds go to support local charities.

For some, the Graffiti Festival is a chance to relive the

days of their youth spent cruising the streets of downtown Modesto and made famous by George Lucas and his film American Graffiti.

The American Graffiti Festival & Car Show, the oldest and largest of Modesto’s Graffiti-related celebrations. The parade route cruises through downtown Modesto, where the cruise originated and then goes down McHenry Avenue to Briggsmore Avenue and back to downtown. The parade will feature thousands of classic cars, hot rods and street rods.

For 2022, the American Graffiti Festival and Car Show will be held June 11 and 12 at the Modesto Junior College West Campus, 2201 Blue Gum Ave.

Registration for cars (must be 1979 or earlier) can be dome at www.AmericanGraffitiFestival.com. Cars entered in the show are eligible to participate in the Friday evening car parade on June 10. There will be a limit of 1,000 parade

entries this year and an additional fee for the parade.

Fall

The pleasant fall weather in Modesto mixed with the changing leaves makes it a perfect time to get out and take a walk and luckily Modesto has two walking art tours to give the eyes a visual feast while out on a stroll.

Modesto is home to more than a dozen unique murals

around downtown and the westside. Some of the murals were created by celebrated artists as part of the Downtown Modesto Partnership’s idea of bringing large-scale art installations to the heart of the city. Other murals were painted with an eye towards celebrating the region’s agricultural heritage and American Graffiti car culture. Throughout the city follow the mural trail downside streets, behind shops and even on the public trails.

Throughout the year, downtown Modesto has a free Art Walk tour on every third Thursday of the month.

The Art Walk is a free event that features art galleries, as well as businesses and organizations that display art for the evening, working together to showcase the best of the arts. There’s also a chance to listen to local musicians, enjoy food and beverage from one of the downtown eateries and if a piece of art really hits home, it can be purchased.

Winter

Lacing up a pair of skates and circling around the rink

at Modesto on Ice is bound to put smiles on the faces of many partaking in this winter tradition.

Set up in the heart of downtown Modesto at 1131 11th Street in downtown Modesto (corner of 11th and K Streets) offers lots of wintertime fun from midNovember to mid-January. The rink is an outdoor tent-covered venue and it’s generally just a few degrees colder on the ice than it is outside. There are a couple fire pits and patio heaters to keep skaters and onlookers warm. The Save Mart Snack Shack located next to the rink offers concessions, including hot beverages.

Skate sessions are priced at just $12 for skaters ages 3-12 and $16 for ages 13 and up, and the skate rentals are included in pricing. Children under 3 are not allowed to skate or be on the ice at any time. Skate sessions are 90 minutes apart. Each session includes approximately one hour and 20 minutes of skating time and about 10 minutes between sessions to clear and resurface the ice.

Stop for unique pizza at Pizzeria Halt

a vision of creating a healthy alter native for pizza, Sambit Duttaroy and his wife Dr. Priti Modi established Pizzeria Halt in Modesto. After only a couple years and all the challenges of COVID they have survived and have opened their first franchisee in New Jersey.

The idea originated in 2018 when the couple first met and they realized that there were not very many healthy alternatives out there for people with special food needs. Since pizza is very popular and universal they decided to open a pizzeria offering their guests a healthy alternative hence the name Pizzeria Halt meaning stop or healthy alternative.

Not only are they plant-based with no animal products but they are nut and dairy free and have gluten free options without any cross contamination.

The staff and others have taste tested and approved many of their options and since opening in January 2020 they have quite a few customer favorites like the Chipotle Chicken pizza, Pepperoni Pizza, BBQ Chicken Pizza, the Hardy Boy, the Cowboy Pizza, and the Keto Hummus Pizza.

You will get the most unique pizza here and they are healthy, said Priti. You will not see these flavors anywhere else. The sauce on top is made fresh here. It is a garlic aioli sauce that is a homemade recipe that gives it zest and it looks good too.

They also have Garlic Knots, Cinni-Bites, Hummus Bread Sticks, and Cheesy Pesto Bread Sticks with a homemade Pesto sauce that is nut free.

They are delighted to bring a healthy alternative to Modesto that has great flavor and several options for anyone with dietary restrictions of any kind.

He wanted to share his kitchen to allow others to enjoy it, said Dr. Modi. We assure you that you will not find such unique pizzas anywhere else. So, we say it is Pizzeria Halt. You must Halt/stop here to try our healthy, delicious plant-based pizzas, which are so unique.

They received the Small Business of the Year award in 2020 from the Modesto Chamber of Commerce for their innovation in pizza and a Green Certificate for their Eco Friendly practices and use of plant-based products.

They are open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and are closed on Sundays.

Pizzeria Halt is located at 3440 McHenry Ave Ste D-10 in Modesto in the Marshall’s Shopping Center.

Burly’s California Bistro finds a welcome home in West Modesto

When caterer Kimberly Gaynor, Chef Mike Ortiz and business partner John Curtis made the decision to open a restaurant together, there was one aspect that Gaynor was absolutely set on. It has to be in West Modesto. It wasn’t going to be anywhere else, Gaynor said. The real estate agent kept saying, ‘Well, I have a place downtown,’ and I’d say ‘No, it has to be in West Modesto.’ We’re all from this side of town and still live on this side of town. And it was something this side of town needed.

Burly’s California Bistro opened at 1219 N. Carpenter Road, Suite 5 in March 2021 and Gaynor’s hunch about West Modesto has been proven correct. The restaurant and bar routinely draws in a crowd of diners and drinkers who come for the delicious meals and stay for the conversations with old and new friends.

West Modesto has been very supportive of us, Gaynor said. One customer said to me that they feel comfortable enought to come in after work milking the cows and sit down and order a beer and get food that they would at a white tablecloth place.

The connection to West Modesto is reflected in a mural on one wall that highlights the region and some

of the landmarks, like Modesto High School.

The three business partners met while working at Mallards and remained friends and sometimes co-workers when opportunities took them to new places and ventures. They operated a successful catering business together for quite sometime, which is where the idea of the restaurant started percolating.

We really wanted a kitchen to cook out of for the catering business and then we thought we might as well attach a restaurant to it, Ortiz said.

Initially, the plan was to open in early 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered that goal. Instead, the fine-tuned their plans and practiced patience. On March 24, 2021, they opened their doors for the first time. It happened to be the first day restaurants in Stanislaus County could open for indoor dining.

FLAVORS

Every week we were waiting to see if they would announce that restaurants could open up, Gaynor said. We played Russian roulette and it worked out because they opened that day.

The cuisine at Burly’s California Bistro takes inspiration from the Central Valley, not to mention the actual products.

It’s a cumulation of what the Valley has, Ortiz said. It’s steak and potatoes and pasta with Asian and Mexican influences.

Some of their specialties include the cavatappi with vodka sauce, the whiskey peppercorn sirloin and the crispy calamari.

The cavatappi pasta is served with chicken or shrimp and is cooked in a very spicy vodka sauce with onions, garlic, mushrooms, red pepper flakes and cream.

The whiskey peppercorn sirloin is topped with a whiskey cream sauce served alongside garlic whipped potatoes and local, seasonal vegetables.

The crispy calamari is an appetizer that is served with a trio of sauces - ginger teriyaki, cilantro pesto and sriracha aioli.

People love them, Ortiz said. They fly out of the kitchen.

The concept of farm to fork was crucial for the restaurant, so they do as much sourcing locally as possible. The hamburger, Dave’s Meat Beef Burger, comes from Dave’s Meats, located just down the road.

The cheeses, fruits, vegetables and nuts all come from local producers.

Because they have this local focus, Ortiz will change the menu to reflect what items are in season.

It’s not just the menu that shines at Burly’s California Bistro. The bar has plenty to offer as well. It’s a fullstocked bar with 10 beers and five wines on tap and a menu of specialty cocktails like the Lavender Lemon Drop and Burly Water, which is a concoction of mango-infused vodka, lemonade and cranberry juice.

The Farmacy: Where Food Is Medicine For A Healthy Body

There is a quaint whole food plant-based café that opened up on 10th Street in downtown Modesto called The Farmacy. With the concept of using food as medicine the Farmacy was established and offers an exclusive menu completely plant-based, vegan, and gluten friendly.

In the summer of 2018, owner Erin Doran found out she had several food allergies, which prompted her to seek healthier ways of eating. She quickly found out how difficult it was to find fast, easy, healthy meals that met her needs; a whole-food, plant-based diet. She wanted to adopt this new way of eating and share it with the local community and so the concept of The Farmacy was born.

Executive Chef Andi Tesch explained that the Farmacy has only been at the 907 10th Street location since around March but the café has been around for a couple years. She has been with Doran serving up edible delights at the Century, Nine3One, and the Farmacy since 2019.

We are like the Farmacy for your food, said Tesch. We make everything in house. Everything is completely plantbased and totally vegan friendly. We also decided to eliminate gluten off of our menu as well because we have discovered that there are so many people out there that want to find a good restaurant, a good experience that they can go to where they don’t have to worry about all of their other food restrictions. They know that they can come here and be perfectly safe in our kitchen.

They have a variety of beverages like the Kombucha on Tap in a variety of flavors, Botanical Lemonade, Cold Pressed

Juice, Cold Brew, Iced Tea, lattes, and build your own smoothies with base fruits, plant milk or juice, and a variety of enhancements like chia seeds, spinach, ginger root, or kale. A crowd pleaser is the Funky Monkey Superfood Smoothie. It comes with chocolate, banana, almond butter, agave nectar and cacao nibs.

For those looking for substance in a meal there are a few top sellers at the Farmacy like the Quinoa Street Tacos, the Watermelon Poke Bowl, and the build your own scramble.

I love that you can change your entire physiology of your body with the food that you eat, expressed Tesch. If you have depression, acne, anything if you change the way that you eat and you can teach other people it will change your entire body. I just think that is fantastic.

Local art scene, delicious food shine at Spotlight Cafe

The Spotlight Cafe in downtown Modesto has a well-earned reputation for delicious coffees, yummy bakery treats and appetizing array of sandwiches, tacos, and other entrees. It is also a place where local artists can showcase their creations, hence the name.

We love to feature art from local artists in our coffee shop, said owner Angela Huerta. We would like to welcome any artists to come and showcase their art. We are looking forward to post-covid events on our stage for open mic nights, poetry, comedy, drama, and singing.

In addition to showcasing the works of local artists, Spotlight Cafe has been hosting vendor events to give their guests a unique dining and shopping experience, while also helping support the neighborhood and beyond. Huerta is looking forward to hosting more of these events and expanding

into other avenues that benefit the community.

We are looking forward to becoming a training facility for a few organizations that help retrain people

for new jobs, Huerta said. We strongly believe in community involvement.

Acampaign is in the works to open a place for children that will be a place to foster creativity, curiousity and learning and it all started with a few families who had a particular vision for the Modesto Children’s Museum.

Chelsea and Ryan Foy, Jena and Ryan Brady, and Katie and Jake Barber served as the founding board members and established the Modesto Children’s Museum nonprofit organization and conducted a feasibility study online in 2019 to gauge support for the project, which brought in thousands of responses.

In Dec. 2020, the nonprofit found their new home when they purchased the building at 928 11th St., in downtown Modesto. They took ownership of it in May 2021 through a generous donation via the Stanislaus Community Foundation from three local families. In the first six months of fundraising, the Modesto Chil-

dren’s Museum received commitments of $2.3 million towards a capital campaign goal of $7.5 million. Early supporters include The Barber Family, The Endsley Family Foundation, The Boyett Family Foundation, The Olson Family Fund, The Porges Family Foundation, The Filippi Family, and The Kolody Family.

The nonprofit has hired Gyroscope Inc., based in Oakland, to design exhibitry for the museum. Studio Ludo, based in Philadelphia, was hired to design a world-class climbing structure and Carol E. Scott was brought on as a consulting director. Additionally, the board of directors has expanded from six founding members to a group of 11, including Diana Avalos, Amy Abid Jeffries, Rosizela Pérez Jordan, Ashley Kipple, and Ivey Mayol.

The board hopes to open the museum in 2023.

• Modesto, founded in 1870, was originally to be named Ralston, after a prominent San Francisco Banker involved in the town’s beginnings. However, when he declined, the founders instead named the town for Ralston’s modesty, using the Spanish word Modesto.

• Modesto’s Arch, built in 1912, displays the slogan Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health. This, however, was not the winner of the slogan contest held by the Modesto Business Men’s Association. HISTORIC GUIDE TO MODESTO

1870-1940 landmark locations

Modesto was founded as a village in October 1870, when the Central Pacific Railroad purchased approximately one square mile of land and began selling lots. Before the Central Pacific Railroad gave shape to the village, Americans had already settled in the area and began farming. Several villages sprang up to provide services to these people, among them cemeteries.

Modesto’s landmarks span different eras of the city’s history. There are tours of specific eras, which include summaries of the period highlighted. This tour, however, focuses exclusively on established landmarks.

Buildings, trees, and objects worthy of preservation are not limited to this list of landmarks. Indeed, as you walk or drive through Modesto you may see many buildings that represent Modesto’s rich history that are not on this list.

McHenry Mansion, 906 15th Street, 1883

Robert McHenry arrived in the northern San Joaquin Valley after the Gold Rush. He purchased the Bald Eagle Ranch, 4,000 acres of farmland north of town, and in 1878 moved to Modesto as a banker. He built his Italianate mansion in 1883 in 1884 became president of the First National Bank of Modesto. McHenry was also the first president of the Modesto Irrigation District Board.

McHenry Museum, 1402 I Street, 1912

Originally used as a public library, the land and money for the library were donated by Oramil McHenry. Today this magnificent building houses a museum of artifacts related to Modesto’s history.

Modesto Arch, I Street at 9th Street, 1912

In 1911, the Modesto Business Men’s Association proposed an Ornamental and Electric Arch and held a slogan contest. The second- prize slogan, Water Wealth Contentment Health, submitted by S.R. Harbaugh, was selected. The arch is the oldest slogan arch in the country and one of the few remaining.

Modesto Ash Tree, 3d Street at Sierra Drive, before 1911

A new kind of ash tree was discovered in 1927 and determined to be compatible with Modesto’s climate. This tree is

over 100 years old, well past its expected lifespan.

Pump Station 9, 1930

Marking one of the few entrances to the City, the Grecian Temple design was modeled after the Sunol Pump Station. The pumphouse was designed by A. O. Carley, an employee of the city’s public works department.

Woolworth Company Sign, 1949

The sign was demolished with the Woolworth building in 1997 – 1998. The building site is now part of the Tenth Street Place Renovation project.

Cressey Manor, 915 17th Street, 1917

The Cressey family was one of Modesto’s most prominent families. Albert Cressey, an early Central California pioneer and strong advocate of irrigation, organized the Modesto Bank, was instrumental in securing the right-of-way for the Southern Pacific Railroad, and was president of the Stanislaus County Agricultural Association. George, the original owner of the house, continued to serve the community in various ways.

Turner Hitching Post, 1104 14th Street, 1871

John D. Turner, original owner of the hitching post and adjoining house, was a member of the prominent Turner family, which made substantial contributions to Modesto’s early commercial development.

Modesto News Herald Building, 726 14th Street, 1894

Built by J.D. Spencer, editor of the Modesto Daily Evening News, it remained a newspaper headquarters until 1920.

Hawke Castle, 115 Magnolia Avenue, 1929

This Norman castle-inspired house was built by Edwin Hawke, the manager of J.C. Penney and owner of the Hawke Crop Dusting Service. He founded the E.R. Hawke Department store at 1013 10th Street in 1934.

McClure Country Place, 1500 N. McClure Road, 1882

Bailey Peyton Hogin, a Confederate army veteran, built the house, which was also the birthplace of Grafton Hogin, Stanislaus County sheriff from 1922 to 1949. Ernest McClure purchased the property in 1904, lured to the area by advertisements that promised water and plenty.

U.S. Post Office and Federal Building, 1125 I Street, 1932-33

Plans for the new post office were prepared by the office of the Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury Department and the building opened in October 1932. In 1936, artist Ray Boynton, assisted by local artists, painted pastoral murals in tempera for the public lobby of the building. Most of the original murals remain.

Seventh Street Bridge, 1916

Using canticrete, a new type of construction, this foot bridge replaced two bridges and a ferry at the same site. The bridge has been known as the Lion Bridge for the recumbent lions at its thresholds.

Fire Bell, 1894

Originally installed in the tower at the old 10th Street fire station, the bell has been moved several times and is now in front of Fire Station 2 on Chicago Avenue.

Enslen Park, 1906

After donating Graceada Park to Modesto, James Enslen donated this property for another park. Planned by John McLaren, who designed Golden Gate Park, it once held a small zoo. The Modesto Women’s Improvement Club super vised construction and landscaping.

Thomas Beard and T.J. Wisecarver gave the Modesto Woman’s Improvement Club 10 acres of land for a park, named for their wives, Grace and Ada. John McLaren, designer of Golden Gate Park, consulted on the park’s plans. The Mancini Bowl honors Francesco Nicolo Frank’’ Mancini, Modesto High School music teacher an organizer of the Modesto Symphony Orchestra in 1931.

Rammed Earth House, 1027 Enslen Avenue, 1934

Owen and Adriene Bradley designed and built the house, made of adobe dug from the back yard. The house is cool in summer and warm in winter, an early demonstration of environmental construction principles.

Southern Pacific Transportation Center, 9th and J Streets, 1915

This classic Mission Revival building replaced an older depot, and served railroad passengers until 1971.

The State Theater, 1307 J Street, 1934

The Art Deco State Theater, built for George Mann and Morgan Walsh of San Francisco by Harry Brown of Modesto, opened on Christmas Day, 1934. The marquee was replaced with an electronic message board and the façade was updated in 2005; walls, murals, seating, and sound system were preserved.

Masonic Temple, 1500 J Street, 1917

This Neoclassical building was originally a Masonic Hall serving Stanislaus Lodge No. 206, Modesto Chapter No. 49, and Electa Chapter No. 72, O.E.S.

Stockton Savings Bank, 1101 J Street, 1937

This is one of Modesto’s few commercial Art Deco buildings. For many years a bank, it is now a restaurant.

H Street Façade, Modesto High School, 18 H Street, 1918

A new high school was needed to accommodate the growing population. The opening celebration included the senior class play, Green Stockings.

Wissner Medical Office Building, 901 McHenry Avenue, 1937

The one-story Mission Revival medical building and private hospital was also the residence of Dr. Leonard O. and Margaret V. Wissner.

Elks Lodge, 1222 I Street, 1927

Built for Modesto Lodge No. 1282 of the Brotherhood of the Protective Order of Elks, the basement held a boxing ring that was donated and dedicated by World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Jack Dempsey.

First Church of Christ Scientist, 1328 H Street, 1922

This two-story structure is Modesto’s only remaining public building which reflects the early 20th century vogue for classical building forms.

Originally a Masonic cemetery, the first graves came from the Westport area.

Modesto Pioneer Cemetery, 905 Scenic Drive, 1852

This land belonged to a land grant signed by President Abraham Lincoln, originally a family cemetery. In 1872, the Wildley Lodge, I.O.O.F. purchased five acres for its use.

Modesto Cemetery, 1001 Scenic Drive, 1855

An 11-acre cemetery, this is the burial site of many of the County’s first settlers. It contains 70 Civil War veterans’ graves.

The City’s first designated Christmas tree was lighted every year for more than 40 years beginning in 1960.

Built by Carl Jessup Stanley and Harriet Kirkman Stanley, Mr. Stanley served in World War I, was a local businessman and a director of the Modesto Bank, and served on City Council from 1935 to 1951. Their daughter, Colleen Stanley Bare, is a historian and author of children’s books.

John M. Walthall Home, 118 Sycamore Avenue, 1911

This shingled bungalow was the home of John Walthall, a great nephew of President James Madison. He served as Stanislaus County District Attorney for two years and later was in private practice. Walthall was active in various civic organizations.

Pacific Telephone Building, 1012 11th Street, 1922

Modesto’s first telephone arrived in 1887. Public service and a switchboard were housed nearby, but moved to this larger Italianate building as the demand for service continued to expand.

Gundlach Home, 410 Elmwood Avenue, 1937

This Provincial building is clad primarily in plaster with a brick-covered front gable.

Lish Residence, 125 Poplar Avenue, 1890

The original owner of this Craftsman bungalow, W.H. Howell, was appointed Modesto’s postmaster in 1910. The Howell family were early settlers who dry-farmed in the Turlock area.

M.D. Harris Home, 230 Sycamore Avenue, 1934

M.D. Harris, the owner of Plato’s Men’s Store, built the house. An excellent example of the Mission architectural style, it is characterized by arches, red tile, and stucco or plaster siding.

Wheat Barge Tree, Tuolumne River Regional Park

This magnificent valley oak is more than 150 years old. Folk history suggests this tree is where barges tied up on their way down the Tuolumne River, transporting wheat to market from Waterford. The tree may have been in use as early as the 1860s and 1870s.

Bunya Bunya Tree, Graceada Park, 1916

The tree, a native of New Zealand, was a gift to the community from the Native Sons of the Golden West in 1916.

Balmannos Residence, 207 Elmwood Court, 1927

Lloyd Gross, the original owner of this Tudor house, served during World War I as a pilot and later became an aerial photographer. His aerial views of Modesto in the early 1920s are in the McHenry Museum archives. His wife, Ida Foote Gross, became a well-known local artist after her retirement from teaching in 1961.

Casa de Cadrett, 201 Hintze Avenue, 1921

This Mission Revival, white stucco house with a red tile roof and wood detailing is surrounded by a white brick fence enclosing a large garden.

Montrie and Robinson Residence, 1001 Magnolia Avenue, 1930

The California/Spanish Eclectic house, similar to those in Los Angeles, was built for Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Hathaway. Hathaway operated the Modesto Grocery at 927 10th Street.

Scully Residence, 124 Sycamore Avenue, 1925

This stately structure successfully combines Colonial and Classical elements. The original owner, Warren S. Tillson, was the son of the founder of the Modesto Lumber Company and later its president.

Foy Apartments, 1418 – 1430 I Street, 1912

This Neoclassical building contains 16 studio units adver-

tised as the most modern apartments in Modesto when it opened. Each apartment was equipped with two Murphy beds, one behind a leaded-glass china buffet in the dining room and the other behind a beveled wall mirror in the bedroom.

Centenary Methodist Church, 201 Needham Avenue, 1920

This two-story Classical Revival building with Romanesque features was constructed in 1920 for the Centenary Methodist Church and was occupied by that congregation until 1960.

Johnson House, 503 W. Morris Avenue, 1927

This English Tudor-style house was built for Clarence and Birdella Johnson. Mr. Johnson owned the Clarence Johnson Insurance Company in downtown Modesto and Mrs. Johnson was very active in community events and organizations.

Robertson House, 215 Elmwood Court, 1933

This two-story, Mediterranean-style house is sheathed in stucco with red tile, wood, and iron details. The rear yard supports the Mediterranean style of the house, with flagstone paving and wood pergola. Dr. J.C. Robertson, the founder of Robertson Hospital, contributed tremendously to the local medical community.

Lundgren House, 218 Elmwood Court, 1928

This Provincial-style house is part of the Coldwell subdivision, which was formed on August 24, 1903, and owned by Virginia Coldwell.

Silva House, 216 W. Morris Avenue, 1925

This California bungalow with wrap-around porch was originally owned by William J. Billy Silva and his wife Evelyn D. Silva. Billy Silva became the local Studebaker dealer in 1919 in partnership with Claude Shackelford. In 1946 he was appointed to the California Fish and Game Commission.

Dr. John Kennedy Doc Ransom House, 305 Magnolia Avenue, 1906

The Shingle style was an unusually free form and variable style with details that are strictly classic and grounded in the Colonial Revival tradition, with a raised first story and a recessed front porch. Its distinctive A-frame shape, shingle surfaces, and gigantic gable are typical. Doc Ransom was a leading member of the medical community in Modesto from, 1920 to 1965, and served as County Coroner for over three decades.
