Turlocker part of D-3 Central Catholic team headed for NorCal finals
baseball

Central Catholic will get another crack at Oakmont (Roseville) High School on Saturday with the CIF’s Northern California Division 3 championship on the line.

Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Oakmont High School.

The top-seeded Vikings (29-7) defeated No. 5 Christopher (Gilroy) 5-3 in Thursday’s semifinal, while the No. 2 Raiders (23-9) edged No. 6 Justin-Siena (Napa) 1-0 on Wednesday.

Turlock resident Will Magni, a right-handed pitcher and part-time outfielder, is a member of the Central Catholic squad.

Oakmont shut out Central Catholic 3-0 on May 23 for the Sac-Joaquin Section D-3 championship, beating CCHS ace Tyler Wentworth, who has signed a letter of intent to pitch for Clemson next year.

The section champion and runner-up each gain entry into the NorCal tournament and, nine days later, the teams are set to face off again with even more at stake.

However, Wentworth will be unavailable to throw today.

Section by-laws put strict limits on how much pitchers can throw in a given week. Because Wentworth threw more than 75 pitches on Wednesday, he is required to rest for three days — Thursday, Friday, Saturday — before taking the mound again.

The Raiders will use a combination of senior RHP Adrian Garcia, who will pitch for Fresno State next season. By section rules, Garcia is available for five innings today, while senior righty Wes Payne, who will pitch for Menlo College next year, will be on full rest.
