Turlock High golf was able to hold off Enochs High to win the CCAL Championship. This is the Bulldogs first championship in three years, before that they won 15 straight league titles.
The CCLA Championship was held at the Turlock and Golf Country Club on Monday. Going into the tournament, Turlock had a two-point lead over the second-place team Enochs. Therefore, if Enochs won the tournament and the Bulldogs took second, both schools would be co-champions. Turlock was able to pull out a narrow victory and are in sole possession in first place in the league.
The Bulldogs were led by sophomore Sydney Streeter who shot even par 72 for medalist honor. Freshman Savannah Van Gaalen wasn’t too far behind her teammate with a score of 75 to grab second place tournament honors. The two Bulldogs set the pace for the rest of the team and gave Turlock a 14-stroke lead.
Sophomore Isabella Dowd and freshman Reece Benjamin both shot 89s to add seven strokes to the team’s lead. The Bulldogs ended up winning the tournament with a team score of 430 to Enochs’ score of 440.
Head coach Mary Krupka has been the leading the Turlock High girls golf team for 19 years. The Bulldogs won the championship the first 15 years under her leadership. They took third place two years ago and second place last year.
“We’ve been working toward this goal of being champions again and today it came to fruition. To top things off we did it with two sophomores and two freshmen in the six-person lineup,” said Krupka.
The Bulldogs might be league championships, but they still have some golf left to play. The team will travel to The Reserve at Spanos in Stockton where they will compete in the CIF Divisional Tournament on Monday.
