PREP ROUNDUP: Turlock track and field teams take CCAL by storm

Turlock High’s boys and girls track and field teams dominated the 2023 regular season. On Friday, the Bulldogs dominated the Central California Athletic League championships at Joe Debely Stadium.

The boys took first place with 220 points, far ahead of second-place Pitman (149) and third-place Enochs (115). Rounding out the finishers were Downey (58), Modesto (47) and Gregori (41).

On the girls side, the Bulldogs totaled 249 points, with Modesto finishing second with 113 and Pitman third at 99, followed by Enochs (80), Gregori (47) and Downey (31).

Turlock senior Ella Spaulding had a big day with individual victories in the 100-meter hurdles (15.81 … just four-four-hundredths of a second ahead of teammate Evelyn Ladine), 300-meter hurdles (48.29), and discus (111-3), while teaming with Ava Torres, Zoe Lamur and Olivia Walker for a victory in the 1,600-meter relay (4:06.28).

Spaulding’s effort in the discus was a personal best, while the other three marks were established new meet records.

Teammate Shaylan Roy-Williams also delivered three individual first-place finishes while taking part on a victorious relay. Roy-Williams won the 100 (12.20), 200 (25.35) and long jump (16-10) and ran a leg on the 400-meter relay team — along with Ladine, Zamur and Alexi Sandoval — that set a new meet record (49.63).

In addition to her work on two relay teams that set meet records, Walker was a winner in the 400 (59.06) and high jump, with a meet-record leap of 5-3.

In the girls pole vault, Turlock’s Brooke Schumacher took first with a meet record 10-6.

Pitman’s lone individual winner was Maci Day, who posted a 5:36.65 in the 1,600.

Day teamed with Adelyn Persons, Emerson Newton and Aubrey Lascano to win the 3,200-meter relay.

On the boys side, Pitman senior Joey Stout set a pair of meet records, winning the 400 in 49.40 seconds and the long jump with a leap 21-2, just 2 inches better than teammate Blayne Siebert and Turlock’s Maxwell McFarlane.

McFarlane, who also finished third in the high jump behind Turlock’s Cash Burton and Pitman’s Justin Anderson, garnered firsts in the triple jump (with a meet record 43-2 3/4) and pole vault (13-11).

Siebert delivered a victory in the 100 with a school record 10.75.

Turlock’s trio of sophomore Teddy Santos (4:41.37), senior Gavin Van Oostende (4:41.81) and junior Daniel Zaragoza (4:44.21) were 1-2-3 in the 1,600. Van Oostende won the 3,200 with a 10:20.79 clocking.

 

Boys tennis

MODESTO — Joe Chan shook off cramps in the third set to stave off teammate Peter Wilson in an all-Turlock High boys singles final at the Central California Athletic League tournament.

It was the second consecutive year that Chan defeated Wilson in the CCAL championship.

Wilson took the first set 6-4, but Chan rallied to take the final two 6-3, 6-4.

Throughout the season, Wilson was the school’s No. 1 singles player, while Chan was No. 2.
