Pitman wrestlers continue to roll in tourney wins

Another weekend, another box of medals are returning to Pitman High School courtesy of the school’s wrestling program. This past weekend at the Webber Lawson Tournament at Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, the Pride saw 10 wrestlers between their girls and boys teams finish in the top three of their respective divisions, including six first-place finishers.

On the girls side, Baya Austin, Gabby Austin, Lexie Capote and Lily Dizon all claimed top spots on the podium. Meanwhile, Troy Ceja and Mason Ontiveros finished first in their boys brackets.

In the 100-pound girls division, Dizon made easy work of her opponents, winning all five of her matches by first period pin.

Over in the 130-pound division, Baya Austin displayed similar dominance as she won her first four matches by first period fall. In the championship match against Tamara Grace of Gilroy, she muscled her way to a 7-3 decision. Her sister, Gabby, had a nearly identical run in the 125-pound division as she cruised to first period finishes in her four matches before claiming first place in a 5-2 decision over Gilroy’s Jocelyn Mendoza.

In the 105-pound division, Capote grabbed three fall victories following a first-round bye. She claimed her first-place medal by winning a 13-6 decision over Alexandra Loretto of Pacheco (Los Banos). 

In the 175-pound boys division, Ontiveros won his first four matches by pin. He ended up winning his semifinal and first-place matches by decision. 

At 285 pounds, Troy Ceja came off of his first-round bye to win his first match of the tournament by first period fall. He proceeded to nab a pair of hard-earned, 2-0 decisions in his quarterfinal and semifinal matches before securing a first period fall over Josiah Escalante-Aranda of Hollister in the first-place match.

Second-place finishers for the Pride were Brayden Silva-Sousa (150), Brodie Johnson (175), Carter Vannest (215) and Jeremiah Mora (285).
