The first Central California Athletic League postseason honors for the fast-growing sport of flag football have arrived, and just like the regular season standings, were dominated by the Pitman and Turlock high school programs.
The Pride, who earned first place in the league’s first flag football season after going 18-3 overall and 13-2 in conference play, headlined the big winners with head coach Matthew Vasconcellos named Coach of the Year, senior quarterback Elexi Pulido taking home Most Valuable Player, and freshman rusher Isabel Fuentes named Defensive Player of the Year.
Pulido led the league with a 72% completion percentage and 241 completions out of 335 pass attempts. She totaled 2,306 yards and 39 touchdowns.
On the other side of the sticks, Fuentes did a bit of everything, racking up 67 tackles, including 28 for loss, 18 sacks, and 10 pass breakups.
The Pride also saw three players named to the All-CCAL First Team — sophomores Lily Dizon and Patricia Bray and freshman Emily Martinez.
At running back, Dizon rushed for 769 yards on 89 carries, caught 46 balls for 427 yards and scored nine total touchdowns. Like Fuentes, Bray was a menace for opposing quarterbacks at linebacker, intercepting 12 passes, including four for scores, breaking up 16 passes and recording 63 tackles. Martinez, meanwhile, had 853 from the slot receiver position, hauling in 32 balls for 540 yards, rushing for another 313 on 29 carries, and scoring 11 total touchdowns.
The Pitman players were joined on the First Team by four Turlock Bulldogs — seniors Isis Cosio, Kealani Solis and Karley Wool and sophomore Natalie Ledesma.
Cosio lined up both at wideout and in the backfield throughout the year, making 56 catches for 863 yards and rushing 22 times for 191 yards. She had 10 total scores. Wool made an impact on both ends of the ball, compiling 479 yards and five touchdowns on 39 receptions, while recording 44 tackles and an interception. Similarly, Solis had 171 all-purpose yards and a rushing touchdown, while making 48 tackles and snagging four interceptions. Ledesma was dominant on defense, making 66 tackles, three sacks and a pair of interceptions.
Second Team honorees consisted of Pitman’s Sofia Martinez, Ashli Mendoza, Ivy Butler and Samantha Stapler, as well as Turlock’s Cadee Campbell, Megan Coehlo, Ayla Lacerda and Eliza Roque.
Honorable mentions were Mia Valencia and Mara Gemperle of Turlock and Carrie Johnson of Pitman.
