High school volleyball gets revved up this Monday night when local teams host the annual Peter J. Saco Foundation Games.
The Sac-Joaquin Section uses the Foundation Games to raise money for the Dale Lackey Scholarship Fund.
Admission $5 for the general public, and $3 for students.
The contests also serve as a warm-up game for local teams, and do not count against their schedules.
Locally, Pitman will visit Hilmar, while Turlock travels to take on Oakdale. Denair will head to Stockton to face Delta Charter, and Turlock Christian will play host to Waterford.
Saco was the section commissioner from 1993-2014. He died in January at the age of 70.
“I think Pete would have loved that the Foundation Games now bear his name,” said assistant SJS commissioner Will DeBoard. “He started these games in his fear year at the helm.”
The section began the Dale Lackey Scholarship program 30 years ago and has raised nearly $700,000 over that span.
“And we have our schools to thank for that,” said DeBoard. “The Foundation Games have raised nearly all that money over the years.”
Most years, the Foundation Games are the official kickoff to the volleyball — and in the winter, basketball — seasons.
However, this season Turlock, Pitman, Hilmar, Hughson and Denair high schools will play in the Orestimba Tournament in Newman today, then play Foundation Games on Monday.
The Pride are coming off a 30-4 season in which they reached the Division I semifinals and qualified for the Northern California regional tournament. The Bulldogs, runners-up to their crosstown rival in the Central California Athletic League race, advanced to the quarters of the D-1 playoffs.
