Turlock High senior-to-be Christian Maggard is four strokes under par — four shots off the lead and tied for seventh place — heading into today’s final round of the Callaway World Championships in Palm Desert.
Maggard is looking to join Turlock High mates Clark and Savannah Van Gaalen, who recently were victorious in their age divisions at the Bumgardner Tournament at Del Rio Country Club in Modesto.
Clark, who graduated last month and will be leaving soon to attend the University of Oklahoma, took the boys 16-18 division — and overall title — with a two-day total 142, two strokes under par. Savannah, meanwhile, won the girls 16-18 category with a 156, 12 shots over par.
Maggard carded matching 70’s over the first two rounds of the Future Golf Champions Tour event.
Guillermo Ochoa Valencia of Mexico and Bobe Salahog of the Philippines are the co-leaders at 8-under-par, followed by Japan’s Ryo Murata and Nathan Wong of Malaysia at 7-under.
Rattanabodin Tassaneetipagorn of Thailand and Kevin Wang of Rancho Cucamonga are at 6-under, while Tyler Sonnenberg of Valencia sits at 5-under. Maggard is one of eight players at 4-under, and one of 28 players in the red.
“I’m hoping to make a bit of a push tomorrow,” said Maggard, who won the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters tournament in 2023 as a sophomore and was the section’s Division 2 champ this past spring. “I’ll try to go low and hope that it all works out. We’ll see.”
Maggard’s opening round, played Monday at the Desert Willow Golf Resort’s Mountain View course, featured three birdies and one bogey.
On Tuesday, playing at Desert Falls Country Club, Maggard started his round on hole No. 6. He was 1-over after five holes and pulled even with a birdie on No. 11, a 526-yard par-5.
Then he carded back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14 (par 3) and 15 (par 5).
“Fourteen was playing about 210 and a little downhill,” said Maggard. “ I hit a 6-iron to within about 20 feet and made the putt. It was a pretty big swinger from right to left.
“On 15, I hit driver and had about 255 left. I hit a 3-iron to the fringe and chipped up to within 2 feet and made the putt.”
After a bogey on No. 1 and birdie on No. 2, left him 2-under, Maggard gave away a stroke with a three-putt No. 4 — his 17th hole of the day.
"I was in really good position there,” said Maggard. “I had about 150 yards in, and I tried to muscle up on a 50-degree (wedge). It fell a little short and in the bunker. It was not a good shot out of the bunker, and then I did something I haven’t done in three tournaments: I three-putted from about 30 feet. That kind of stung.”
Maggard then birdied his final hole of the day to finish at 2-under for the round. He’ll return to the Mountain View course today and start his round on hole No. 1.
Savannah Van Gaalen carded three birdies during her march to the Bumgardner title, while her older brother recorded six birdies on his way to a 5-under 67 in the first round, and two more birdies during his second-round 75.
Clark Van Gaalen held off Eric Niu by one stroke, while Savannah Van Gaalen was six shots clear of runner-up Armani Starke.
