Warrior Field on the campus of Stanislaus State will once again play host to some of the top prep baseball players in the county on Saturday with the return of the Modesto Sunrise Rotary All-Star Game.
The 32nd edition of the annual all-star showcase will feature 45 ballplayers from 22 schools in Stanislaus County, including a handful from Turlock-area teams.
Turlock High School, this year’s Central California Athletic League champion, will be represented on the Blue team by a trio of seniors — outfielder Carter Crivelli, pitcher and infielder Andrew “Bubba” Lujan, and first baseman Tyler Castro. Their CCAL counterparts from across town, Pitman High School, will also have a pair of seniors, pitcher/catcher Alex Trujillo and pitcher/outfielder Daniel Mazon, on the Gold team.
Joining the Pitman boys on the Gold roster, representing Denair High School, is junior right-hander Kaden Prine.
Aside from the three Bulldogs, the Blue team will also have a stable of Hughson High Huskies in their dugout. This year’s Trans-Valley League champions will be represented by pitcher Caleb Wilson, infielder Paul Wagner, catcher JC Lupercio and infielder Beau Blake. Managing the Blue squad will be their head coach, Charly Garza, as well as assistant coaches Juan Lupercio and Andy Sanchez.
Crivelli, who was recently named CCAL Most Valuable Player, will be making his second consecutive Rotary All-Star appearance. For the season, Crivelli hit .424 (28-for-66) with 26 runs scored and 10 runs driven in. He also stole 11 bases in 12 attempts. Lujan had an even .300 average (18-for-60) with 12 RBI at the plate, while achieving a 6-3 record and a 2.18 ERA with 36 strikeouts over 51 1/3 innings on the bump. Castro batted .329 (25-for-76) with 27 RBI this season.
As for the Pitman players, Trujillo was Mr. Everything for the Pride. Aside from being “a true team leader,” as head coach Andy Walker described him, Trujillo led the team in hits (29), batting average (.414), OBP (.549) and runs (20). He also had 13 RBI at the plate and a 2.98 ERA on the hill. The only person with a better ERA was Mazon, who posted 1.74. With the bat, Mazon had 26 hits and 14 RBI.
Prine, the ace for the Coyotes competing in the Southern Athletic League, was named league Pitcher of the Year after racking up 106 strikeouts and achieving a 1.09 ERA over 57 2/3 innings. Furthermore, he tossed five complete games, including a pair of no-hitters. In all, he had a 6-4 record.
Wagner, a senior, led Hughson with a .398 average (40-for-101) and crushed opposing pitching with a 1.165 OPS with three home runs, 32 runs driven in, 45 runs scored and 12 stolen bags. Wilson was similarly powerful at the plate, blasting six home runs en route to a .311 average (28-for-90), 1.119 OPS and 36 RBI. On the mound, the senior had a 9-1 record and a 1.09 ERA with 91 punchouts over 64 innings. Lupercio batted .378 (37-for-98) with 18 RBI his junior year, as well as serving as the defensive rock behind the dish for the Huskies this season. Meanwhile, Blake came onto the scene with Hughson midway through the year after being ineligible for over a month after transferring from Turlock Christian. In the junior’s 17 games, he hit .319 (15-for-47) with three home runs and 14 RBI.
First pitch for Saturday’s exhibition is slated for 2:05 p.m. Admission is $5 at the gate and game programs will be sold for $2, with all money going towards the Modesto Sunrise Rotary’s community service projects.
