As the anniversary of the tragic death of Turlock High basketball coach John Williams approaches, the school and his family will honor his memory with the inaugural Big John Williams 3V3 Jamboree.
The three-on-three basketball tournament will take place at 9 a.m. at Turlock High School on Dec. 29, the one-year anniversary since Williams, also known as Big John, succumbed to injuries suffered from a three-vehicle collision near Pitman High School as he and his family were making their way to a girls basketball game.
The jamboree is open for both adults and children, with all proceeds going towards the Turlock High boys and girls basketball teams. Those ages 18 and up can register for $100, while children from fourth to eighth grade can sign up at $50 a spot.
Those interested in signing up or learning more information can contact his daughter, Shea Williams, at (209) 605-2275.
Pitman Holiday Classic
Williams’ death led to the remainder of the 10th annual Pitman Holiday Classic last year to end abruptly. The 11th edition of the tournament, which tips off Thursday and is sponsored by the Kiwanis of Greater Turlock, hopes to have a brighter ending.
The host Pride, who are 4-6, will take on nearby Hughson, who are the defending tournament champions. But the Huskies have struggled out of the gate, fielding a 1-7 record thus far. The teams will clash at 7:30 p.m.
Bulldogs in action at holiday tournament
Turlock’s boys team will once again be participating in Modesto Christian’s Holiday Hoop Classic, beginning on Thursday. The Bulldogs, who sport a 4-6 record in the young 2024-25 season, will open their tournament at 8:30 p.m. against Weston Ranch.
The Lady Bulldogs, meanwhile, will head into one of the largest and competitive preseason tournaments in the region, the West Coast Jamboree. Turlock, who are 2-9, will open Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the Opal bracket against Carlmont from the Robert Livermore Community Center in Livermore.
