ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Vincent Gonzales
Vincent Gonzales
Turlock High quarterback Vincent Gonzales

Turlock High quarterback Vincent “Deuce” Gonzales completed 11 of 18 passes for a career high 265 yards and three touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 57-14 win over Sheldon (Sacramento) in the opening round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 playoffs.

Gonzales will lead the Bulldogs (6-5), winners of six in a row after a brutal preseasons schedule, into a rematch Friday with Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills), which ended their 2022 season in the D-1 playoffs.

Turlock will enter this game as a 21-point underdog, according to CalPreps.com.

Last year, Turlock entered the quarters as a decided underdog, only to walk away with a 51-50 upset of top-seeded St. Mary’s. Turlock will have to pull off a similar miracle this year in order to reach the semifinals again.

In addition to last year’s semifinals, Oak Ridge ended Turlock’s season in 2019 (24-14) and 2018 (27-9).

“To be honest, our team just wants to make history at this point,” said Gonzales, in his first season as the Bulldogs’ starting QB. “We’ve lost to them every time we’ve played. We want to be remembered as the team that beat them, not just another team that lost to them.”

Gonzales said the return of receiver Carter Crivelli from injury has opened up Turlock’s offense.

“He’s been our leader to be honest,” said Gonzales. “I rely on him a lot.”
