With the year officially wrapped up for local prep football teams, the Central California Athletic League and the Trans-Valley League have announced their postseason award winners.
Taking home the big hardware of the Turlock teams in the All-CCAL list was the Bulldogs’ James Peterson (Coach of the Year), Time Sitala Jr. (Outstanding Offensive Lineman), Bradlee Green (Outstanding Defensive Back/Linebacker) and Kaeden Patterson (Outstanding Defensive Lineman), as well as Pitman’s Isaac Padilla (Special Teams Player of the Year).
Over in the TVL, Hughson quarterback Robert McDaniel headlined as he was named Most Valuable Player. One of his top targets, Malakai Sumter, was named Outstanding Receiver, as well as Outstanding Defensive Back. Joining them in representing the Huskies was Colton Taylor as Outstanding Defensive Lineman.
Peterson, in his 16th season at the helm at THS, led the Bulldogs to a 9-4 overall record on the year, including a 5-0 run in league play. The team won their second straight, undefeated CCAL title.
Sitala Jr. was at the head of the offensive line that helped the Bulldogs put up 3,421 yards, even in the second half of the season in the aftermath of the sudden death of his father, who was an assistant coach. He also earned a First Team Defense nod for his work as a pass-rusher and run-stopper.
Green, at linebacker, recorded 34 tackles and forced a pair of fumbles. Patterson was similarly dominant up front, pressuring opposing quarterbacks countless times that resulted in five sacks.
At kicker, Padilla put up nearly a quarter of the Pride’s points in their 2-8 season. He made 15 of 17 extra-point attempts and fired in six of nine field goal attempts. One was a career-long of 50 yards.
In one of the toughest small-school leagues in the state, Taylor made his presence known in the trenches by making 37 tackles and a sack on the year for the champion Huskies. Offensively, Sumter hauled in 37 balls from McDaniel for 775 yards and nine touchdowns, while also taking nine handoffs for 51 yards. At safety, he recorded two interceptions and crashed in on 53 total tackles.
McDaniel had the most prolific resume of any player in the region, which helped him land an opportunity to join the UCLA program next season. He completed 180 of 293 attempts for a league-high 2,889 yards and 34 touchdowns. He also scrambled 39 times for 141 yards to help the Huskies to a 13-1 season and a third straight Sac-Joaquin Section banner. Those stats were recorded despite him sitting out the second half of multiple games.
Also breaking 3,000 all-purpose yards on the year was Turlock quarterback Scout Silva, though he was noticeably absent from the special awards and was instead named to the CCAL’s Second Team Offense for his position. The freshman completed 147 of 235 attempts for 2,456 yards and 29 touchdowns, and also carried the ball 97 times for 600 yards and another 12 scores.
Downey quarterback Carson Lamb won CCAL Most Valuable Player after throwing for 3,739 yards and 43 touchdowns on 338 completions and running for another 309 yards and a scoring sneak as the Knights achieved a 10-2 record and were the runner-up in the league standings.
His leading receiver, Ethan Woodmansee, won Offensive Player of the Year after catching 45 balls for 804 yards and 11 touchdowns. Meanwhile, Gregori's Alton Williams was named Outstanding Offensive Back/Receiver. He rushed for 901 yards and six touchdowns on 1-3 carries, and ran out of the backfield to catch 21 passes for 301 yards and four touchdowns. They both beat out Turlock’s Junior Silva, who was instead named to the First Team Offense after racking up 1,088 yards and 12 touchdowns on 46 catches to cap his high school career.
Named the quarterback of the CCAL First Team was Emmanuel Vasquez, also of Gregori. The senior threw for 1,535 yards and 20 touchdowns and scrambled for 292 yards and five scores.
