It may not be an in-division rivalry, but the intensity is still there every time the Warriors and the Wildcats meet. On Sunday, the 10th rank Cal State Stanislaus side handed Chico State its first loss in a 2-0 victory at Warrior Stadium.
The Warriors remain undefeated at 4-0-0 overall (2-0-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association North Division) while extending their regular season winning streak over Chico State to six.
Karenee Demery scored on a header in the 16th minute to give Stanislaus the early lead. Tina Benson gave the Warriors a 2-0 cushion in the 67th minute. The defense held on to picked up its third shutout in four matches in 2013.
"I was very proud of the way we played. This is the best game we have played so far this season," CSUS head coach Gabriel Bolton said. "Our possession and confidence with the ball was exceptional."
Chico State, assigned by the conference to the CCAA South Division this season, suffered its first loss and fell to 3-1-0, 1-1-0 CCAA.
In the CCAA, one Northern California institution has to be placed in the CCAA South Division standings due to the fact that there are more NorCal teams in the 12-team league.
Demery scored her sixth of the year at 15:13 as a result of a toss-in from Maryssa McDuffy to Katelyn Nebesnick, who touches back to McDuffy. McDuffy's service found the head of Demery, who knocked it in for the 1-0 lead.
In the second half, at 66:15, Demery drew a crowd of defenders on the far side leaving a streaking Benson open. A nice pass to Benson through traffic allowed a three-yard tap-in for the 2-0 lead.
"We also created fantastic chances throughout the entire match against a well coached and organized team," added Bolton.
In the final shot-count, the Warriors outpaced the Wildcats, 17-6 with an 8-0 advantage on corner kicks.
The Warriors has now allowed just one goal in four matches and has out-scored opponents 15-1.
Demery scored twice and assisted on a goal on Friday bring her weekend total to three goals and two assists. She leads the team with 15 points (6 goals, 3 assists).
Cal State Stanislaus will hit the road next weekend with matches at Sonoma State on Friday and Humboldt State on Sunday.
