Marlene Doris Herrmann was born on September 6, 1932, in French Camp, California, the youngest of seven children born to John and Emilia Lang. Marlene’s early years were filled with joyful memories in Chico, California, where she loved swimming at the Five Mile in Bidwell Park and attending her older brothers’ football and baseball games. Along with her sister, Joyce, Marlene was sent to Napa Valley to receive a Christian education, eventually attending Pacific Union College in Angwin. While in nursing school at Glendale Adventist Hospital, Marlene met Donn Herrmann, a medical intern at the White Memorial Hospital. The two shared a passion for speed skating, and their relationship blossomed at an ice skating club in Glendale. They were married at the Garden of the Roses in Pasadena, followed by a honeymoon at Lake Arrowhead, where they later enjoyed many weekends water skiing with Donn’s medical school classmates. In 1954 Marlene and Donn moved to Turlock, California, after visiting her sister Joyce and her husband, Chet Bowes, in Modesto. During a fateful stop at Hauck’s Pharmacy, the couple met Mayor Christopherson, who personally gave them a tour of the town, leading to the decision to settle in Turlock and establish Donn’s medical practice. According to their daughters, it was one of the best decisions they ever made. Marlene quickly became an active member of the community, involved in the Newcomers Club and serving as president of the County Medical Society Auxiliary. She served as a room mother at her daughters’ elementary school and was active in the Sabbath School class at the Turlock Seventh-Day Adventist Church. She loved outdoor activities including water and snow skiing and playing tennis at the local racquet club. She was the consummate hostess entertaining friends and family at their home in Turlock or at Tulloch Lake. Marlene always welcomed her daughters’ friends to join them. Marlene spent many hours in her yard and was often seen mowing the lawn or working in her flowers. She was also a member of the Gardens of Fioli in Woodside, where she attended gardening classes, summer concerts and the annual Christmas boutique. After Donn’s passing, Marlene moved to Palm Desert to be closer to her daughters and to enjoy the desert landscape. Marlene is survived by her daughters, Tedi and her husband Don Anderson (Indian Wells) and Kristi and her husband Richard McCune (Irvine), sister Joyce Bowes Underwood, and brother Sydney Lang as well as her many beloved nieces and nephew. Marlene will always be remembered by her beautiful smile and her kind Christian spirit
