Maria M. Nunes, 77, of Turlock, passed away Wednesday, October 8. Also known as Mary, she was born September 23, 1937 to Francicso and Maria Freitas on the island of Terceira in the Azores. She married Jose “Joe” C. Nunes in 1956 and they immigrated to the United States in 1968 with their children, Alfred and George. Mary loved to sew and was an excellent seamstress. She made suits for her husband and sons. When she was able, she would be active in Sacred Heart Church and Our Lady of Assumption in Turlock, but she was most involved with family. Her family was most important and she was a generous, warm, and loving part of it. 

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joe Nunes, and eldest son, Alfred Nunes. She is survived by her son, George (Nadine) Nunes, granddaughter Anna Nunes, brother, Jorge Freitas, and sister, Maria Amalia Toste, brothers-in-law, Alfred (Zelia) and Luis (Maria Jose) Nunes, sisters-in-law, Fatima Pires and Celina (Joaquin) Mancebo, and many beloved nieces and nephews. 

A visitation will be held at Turlock Funeral Home, 425 N. Soderquist Rd., in Turlock, on Monday, October 13, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. with a recitation of the rosary at 6:00 p.m. The funeral mass will follow on Tuesday, October 14, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption, 2602 S. Walnut Rd., Turlock, with entombment in Turlock Memorial Park.
