John Walter Guy, Jr., 90, was born in Turlock to Mabel and John Guy, Sr. John’s father was mayor of Turlock from 1930-35 and owner of Guy Funeral Home.
John died peacefully at his home with his wife of 44 years, Betty, by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-daughter Janis Martin. John graduated from Turlock High in 1942, and he proudly served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. After his military service, he returned to Turlock where he remained for the rest of his life. In 1952, John and his business partner Steve Sliger opened Guy and Sliger men’s clothing store on W. Main St. The store was later renamed, “The Hanger.” In 1970, John began what would become a successful 30-year career as a realtor in Turlock. He was an active member of the Turlock Exchange Club for over 40 years.
John was known as a gentleman and a good friend. He met his friends daily for coffee at Latif’s Restaurant or Christina’s Coffee House. He immensely enjoyed his house boating and fishing trips with “The Owls,” and he also very much enjoyed his many hours on the golf links.
John is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife Betty Guy; daughters, Robin (Jim) Reape and Heather (Lisa) Guy; step-daughters, Paige (Gary) Crowell, Jeanne (Gilles) Boulet, and Phyllis (Duane) Nelson; sister, Janet Gilmore; 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wed., July 1st at Turlock Funeral Home, 425 N. Soderquist Rd., Turlock. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thurs., July 2nd at the same location. Interment will follow at Turlock Memorial Park.
