James Franklin Powell, age 88, a short term resident of Turlock, passed away Saturday October 8, 2011 in Turlock.
James was born July 29, 1923 in Muldrow, Oklahoma to Joe and Janie Powell.
He married Gladys Brown April 27, 1940 in Van Buran, Ark.
Serving his country in the U.S. Army in World War II from 1944-1946 as a Switchboard Operator, Central 309 Rifle Sharpshooter GO 3 3 WD 45, in New Guinea, Southern Philippines, Luzon Philippine, where he received a Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star and a Good Conduct Medal. In the 60's he worked for Stars Auto Parts/Hartvickson of Turlock before relocating to Ukiah, Ca.
James was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Gladys Powell, daughter of Roosevelt and Lottie Brown in 2009 and his son James Eugene Powell in 2007 of Willits, Ca.
Surviving family includes 2 sons, Jimmy Powell and wife Glenda of Porterville, Ca., Velty Powell and wife Diane of Sonora, Ca. and Daughter-in-law Connie Powell of Willits, Ca.
Six grand children, Becky Crathers and husband David of Willits, Ca. Dna Griffis and husband Dalby of Mt. Pleasant, Texas, Tammy Winters and husband Robert of Camp Nelson, Ca., Diana Powell of Sonora, Ca., Joey Powell and wife Crissy of Sonora, Ca. and Amy Shaw and husband Chris of Porterville, Ca.
Five Great-grandchildren, Jim-Bob Powell, Dustin Mesmore, Gary Lail, Joshua Lail and Hayley Shaw.
Services will be held on Monday, Oct. 17, 2011 at 11am at Turlock Funeral Home with interment to follow at Turlock Memorial Park.
