It is with a heavy, saddened heart that we announce the passing of Edward “Ed” Gene Sugiura on December 26, 2024 at the age of 70.

Ed was born on August 27, 1954 in Turlock, CA to Tsutomu “Toot” and Shigeko “Pat” Sugiura.

Ed was raised on the almond and peach farms of Cortez, CA (a small farming community outside of Ballico, CA).  He spent a good deal of his childhood waterskiing on Turlock Lake every weekend with all the Cortez families.

Ed graduated from Livingston High School in 1972, where he then attended Merced College to receive his certification in automotive mechanics.

Eddy worked alongside and made many friends throughout his years as a mechanic. From his time at The Ford Shop, to his self employed business Sugiura’s Mobile Repair, Smith Chevrolet and finally working at Patchett’s Ford Mercury for 25 years from 1987 until retiring in 2012.

Ed was preceded in death by his grandparents (Yonehichi and Suye Sugiura and Tominosuke and Chiyoko Shiotani), his parents Tsutomu “Toot” and Shigeko “Pat” Sugiura, uncles General and Sat Sugiura, aunt “Chic” Hoy, and wife Peggy Sugiura. He is survived by his son Daniel “Johnny” Gomes, daughters Nichole “Nikki” Hernandez–Oliver, and youngest Stachia “Staci” Gomes–Sugiura, son–in–laws James “Jimmy” Oliver, and Brian Gonzales, and daughter–in–law Haley Gomes, his sister Gail Sugiura–Bush, brother in–law Laurens “Larry” Bush, twin brother Ted Sugiura Sr., aunt Mable Sugiura, cousins Mike and Michelle Sugiura. Ed had 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren whom he loved greatly.

To many he was “Ed, Eddy, or even Fast Eddy”, but to us he will always be “Papa”.

Almonds

Take me back to the place I know, where we lay under the stars, where the almonds grow. The magpie mimics the songs of summer, my home is where the sunset paints the dairy farms with color.
