Playhouse Merced launched its brand new season with the bright sounds and brilliant hues of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”
Based on the biblical story about Joseph and his coat of many colors, the show follows the life of the title character from Canaan to Egypt as he goes from his father’s favorite son to imprisoned slave to trusted friend of a Pharaoh, never letting life weigh him down no matter how desperate his situation becomes.
Filled with memorable songs in styles including country western, calypso, and a touch of Elvis, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is a family-friendly musical that is remarkably fun and entertaining.
More than 30 talented performers from throughout the Central Valley have come together to bring the show to life.
Written by the legendary duo of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” has become one of the most popular musicals in the world since its premiere on London’s West End in the 1970s. The story, characters, and music have an enduring quality that audiences have been falling in love with for decades, and it has seen numerous Broadway revivals and productions around the world.
Songs like “Go, Go, Go Joseph” and “Any Dream Will Do” infuse the musical with comedy, heart and a joyful energy.
Performances of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” started on Friday and run through Sept. 22 at Playhouse Merced, 452 W. Main St. in Merced with shows at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $23 with discounted tickets available for students and anyone under 18.
