A chain-reaction collision on a rain-slick freeway claimed the life of a Turlock man and injured several others Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The deceased was identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as Frank Alan Hernandez, 32, of Turlock.
The collision involved eight vehicles, including two big rigs and was reported around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 5, near the Interstate 580 junction and west of Vernalis.
The wet conditions had already caused one collision in the area and had slowed traffic. A big rig approaching the slower traffic was unable to stop in enough time and crashed into a vehicle, prompting a chain reaction of collisions.
It’s unknown at this time where Hernandez’s vehicle was located in the chain.
The CHP reported the collision caused several injuries of various severity and prompted the freeway to be closed for several hours.
