A 13-year-old was killed Monday night after being hit by a car while running in Winton.

The teen, whose name is being withheld pending family notification, and another person were running on Winton Way south of Bridget Court at about 7:30 p.m. on Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At one point the teen ran into the northbound lane of Winton Way and into the path of a Nissan Altima traveling at 30 mph and driven by Samantha Miller.

According to the CHP, Miller applied her brakes and turned her car to the right to avoid a collision, however, the right front area of her car hit the teen and the 13-year-old was thrown into the air.

After the collision, Miller moved her car to a safe distance and waited for emergency responders. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene. Miller and her 7-year-old passenger told the CHP they were not injured.

Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the collision, but the incident remains under investigation.
