Spring crafts, lawn landscaping tips highlight March library events

The Turlock Library will offer a variety of events open to the community in the month of March, which aim to foster literacy and inspire learners of all ages.

Independent readers up to age 12 are invited to practice their reading skills with the special Read to a Dog program at 12 noon March 1 at the Turlock Library. This program is designed to help children gain confidence in their reading skills by reading aloud to certified therapy dogs. Space is limited and online registration is required.

A T(w)een Tuesday event will be held at 4 p.m. March 4. Participants can come to the Turlock Maker Space and learn about glass art sculptures and then create their own "glass" sculpture using plastic bottles and Sharpie pens. Materials will be provided. This program is designed for ages 9 and up.

Younger children will have the opportunity to flex their creativity while designing suncatchers at 4 p.m. March 4. This activity is aimed at children 8 and younger, but all ages are welcome. Children under 4 must have direct adult supervision.

The AARP Foundation will hold free tax preparation assistance from IRS-trained volunteers from noon to 3 p.m. every Wednesday in March, starting March 5. Walk-ins are welcome, as there is not an option for advance registration.

The library will host Turlock Pokémon Day from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. March 5. Come to the library to meet others who share your passion for Pokémon. Hang out and feel free to trade or battle on your Nintendo Switch, bring your trading cards for a friendly game, hunt for shinies in Pokémon GO, and more. All ages welcome; children 4 and under must have direct adult supervision.

The Friends of the Turlock Library will meet at 6:30 p.m. March 5. Newcomers are welcome.

The library will host a presentation by local historian Scott Atherton on Turlock in the 1920s at 11 a.m. March 8.

The Mystery Lovers Book Club will meet at 10:30 a.m. March 10. This month, the club will discuss “The Third to Die” by Allison Brennan. Detective Kara Quinn, on leave from the LAPD, is on an early morning jog in her hometown of Liberty Lake when she comes upon the body of a young nurse. The manner of death shows a pattern of highly controlled rage. Meanwhile in DC, FBI special agent Mathias Costa is staffing his newly minted Mobile Response Team. Word reaches Matt that the Liberty Lake murder fits the profile of the compulsive Triple Killer. It will be the first case for the MRT. This time they have a chance to stop this zealous if elusive killer before he strikes again. But only if they can figure out who he is and where he is hiding before he disappears for another three years. The Mystery Lovers Book Club meets on the second Monday of every month in the Turlock Library Community Room. 

A T(w)een Tuesday event at 4 p.m. March 11 will have participants build LEGO creations and then bring them to life with stop-motion film.  This program is designed for ages 9 and older.

Children of all ages can come to the library at 4 p.m. March 11 and build LEGO creations using the library’s LEGO and Duplo blocks. This program helps young ones develop critical thinking skills, and teaches basic engineering concepts. Children under 4 are welcome, but must have direct parental supervision.

The Turlock Teen Anime Club will meet from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. March 12. This month the club will be watching “Moriarty the Patriot” (TV-14) and then making a craft. This event is for ages 12-19

A Turlock STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) event at 4 p.m. March 18 will feature mobiles. Kids can learn about balance and weights while practicing their finger dexterity as they make a mobile. This activity is aimed at children ages 8 and younger, but all ages are welcome. Children under 4 must have direct adult supervision.

A T(w)een Tuesday event at 4 p.m. March 18 will be allow participants to be herb & spices detectives with the Master Gardeners. Kids can take a "quiz" and see if they can their your senses to name the mystery plants used in seasonings. Participants can take home seeds and start their own herb garden in the ground or in a pot. This program is designed for ages 9 and up.

The Turlock Chess Club will meet at 5 p.m. March 19. Whether you are an amateur, a master, or somewhere between, bring your board to meet and play against others for practice or friendly competition. 

The library will host an open sew session at 1 p.m. March 21. Community members can bring their projects to the Turlock Maker Space and use one of the library’s sewing machines, or try a project from one of the library’s previous classes. There are a limited number of projects available. Participants must be able to use a sewing machine independently. Bring your own fabric and notions; only sewing machines, a serger, irons, scissors, and scrap fabric will be available. Open Sew is designed for ages 18 and up.

The T(w)een Tuesday event at 4 p.m. March 25 will be about sticker journals. Kids can meet in the Turlock Library Maker Space and design a sticker journal to hold the fabulous stickers they've collected. Materials will be provided, including stickers. This program was designed for ages 9 and up.

Younger children can use crayons and watercolors to see the science behind how water and oil do not mix while creating their own unique artwork to take home at 4 p.m. March 25. Designed for children ages 8 and younger, but all ages are welcome. Children under 4 must have direct supervision from parents or adult guardians.

The library will host a Video Game Day starting at 3 p.m. March 26. Participants can meet in the Maker Space for byte-sized video game fun on the Nintendo Switch. For ages 6 and up.

The Master Gardeners will host a “new front yard” class at 6 p.m. March 26. If you are thinking about replacing all or part of your lawn, this class is for you. Learn tips on how to save water, convert to drip, and get a list of water wise plants.
