For the fifth year, Salon Rouge in downtown Turlock is getting set to host one of the more unique fundraisers of the year on Sunday afternoon.
Tabbed as “Salsa and Scissors” the stylists at the salon will once again be donating their time and services for Ramina’s Memorial Corporation, a non-profit organization in honor of the late Ramina Badal, that works in conjunction with other local charities to provide a helping hand to those in need.
In 2011, Badal, 21, and two of her friends were swept away over a waterfall at Yosemite National Park. The non-profit has organized projects to feed the homeless, raise money for cancer patients, as well as hand out scholarships to those pursuing a higher education.
Like the non-profit, Sunday’s fundraiser at Salon Rouge will be doing a little bit of everything to support local community members in need. The salon’s hairstylists, nail technicians and skin care professionals will donate the money from their appointments to the foundation, while hair will be donated to make wigs for those who have lost hair battling cancer. Haircuts will be free for those who donate 12 inches or more.
“I’ve been doing this for a few years now, and I really wanted to do it because they're such a beautiful family,” said Salon Rouge owner Carmen Benyamin. “I know her (Ramina) from church, and she is such a wonderful girl. The family always wants to give to the community, so I think this was one of the best ways to help them do that.”
Benyamin acknowledged that her salon has lots of extra space, which makes it a prime location for the fundraiser to be held, as there are also raffles and refreshments available to guests. And considering this year’s theme of Salsa and Scissors, you may have guessed correctly that salsa music and dancing will be on the schedule.
The event Sunday is taking place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Those looking to participate must schedule an appointment with Salon Rouge prior to showing up at bit.ly/2023SalonDay.
“It’s such a wonderful day and such a heartwarming event,” Benyamin said. “I hope more people can learn about this and come out. It is really a beautiful thing.”
