Pythons, pumpkins and Pokémon coming to the Turlock Library in October

Activities for teens and children at the Turlock Library on Oct. 15 will be all about the science of spider webs (Photo contributed).

The Turlock Library will offer a variety of arts and crafts, literacy and family fun events throughout the month of October.

October events will start with a T(w)een Tuesday activity at 4 p.m. Oct. 1 using oil pastels. Participants will learn to use oil pastels and create a moonlit pumpkin patch landscape. Materials will be provided. This program is designed for ages 9 and up.

Children ages 8 and under are invited to the library at 4 p.m. Oct. 1 for a Turlock Art Lab activity on monster symmetry. Participants can make monsters out of paint. Children under 4 must have direct adult supervision.

The Friends of the Turlock Library group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 2. All are invited.

Adults can sign-up to attend a sewing class on making a fabric wrapped basket at 1 p.m. Oct. 4. Participants will learn how to use the zig-zag stitch on the sewing machine to create a basket out of fabric strips and cotton piping. Materials and sewing machines are provided. This class is designed for ages 18 and up. Registration is required.

‘Python Ron’ will be at the Turlock Library at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 4 and Oct. 11. He will bring his favorite lizards and snakes to the library for a creepy-crawly good time. This educational hands-on show-and-tell is open to all ages. Space is limited. Free tickets will be handed out one hour before the show. 

The Read to a Dog program will be held at 12 noon on Oct. 5. Independent readers up to age 12 are invited to practice their reading skills with the special Read to a Dog program at the Turlock Library. This program is designed to help children gain confidence in their reading skills by reading aloud to certified therapy dogs. Space is limited; preregistration is required.

The T(w)een Tuesday event for 4 p.m. Oct. 8 will be making stop-motion LEGO creations in the Maker Space. Participants can build LEGO creations using the library’s LEGO blocks and bring them to life with stop-motion film. This program is designed for ages 9 and older, however, all ages are invited to the library at 4 p.m. for a LEGO play day. Children under 4 are welcome, but must have direct parental supervision.

The Turlock Teen Anime Club will meet at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 9. This month the club will be watching “Theatre of Darkness: Yamishibai” (TV-14).
This activity is for ages 12-19.

The Mystery Lovers Book Club will meet at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 14. This month, the Mystery Lovers Book Club will discuss “A Morbid Taste For Bones” by Ellis Peters. The bones of an obscure saint from a remote Welsh village are to be transferred to Cadfael's monastery, but the tangled affairs of two pairs of lovers, unwelcome miracles and visitations and even murder intervene.

The T(w)een Tuesday activity for 4 p.m. Oct. 15 will be about spider science. Participants will learn how spiders build webs. Then, they will test their web-building skills in a spider web-building challenge. This program is designed for ages 9 and up.

The Turlock STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) activity for 4 p.m. Oct. 15 will also be about spider webs. Participants will explore how spiders catch their prey. This activity is geared for children under 8; children under 4 must have direct supervision from parents or adult guardians.

It will be Turlock Pokémon Day at the library from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 16. Participants can meet others who share their passion for Pokémon, while hanging out to trade or battle on your Nintendo Switch. Participants are invited to bring their trading cards for a friendly game, hunt for shinies in Pokémon GO, and more. All ages welcome; children 4 and under must have direct adult supervision.

The Turlock Chess Club will meet at 5 p.m. Oct. 16. Whether you are an amateur, a master, or somewhere between, you are invited to bring your board to meet and play against others for practice or friendly competition. 

The T(w)een Tuesday activity for 4 p.m. Oct. 22 will be about masquerade masks. Participants can get creative and make masquerade masks just in time for all your masked adventures. Materials will be provided. This program is designed for ages 9 and up. At the same time, children ages 8 and under can come to the library at 4 p.m. Oct. 22 and choose from a selection of animal-shaped masks and etch designs to reveal the color underneath while supplies last. Children under 4 must have direct supervision from parents or adult guardians. 

The UCCE Master Gardeners will be at the Turlock Library at 6 p.m. Oct. 23 for a presentation on composting basics. Wish you could turn your kitchen and garden waste into "gold?" Want to create your own compost to use in your houseplants and garden? This class will go over the basics of composting and how to have a successful compost pile.

The Turlock Library will host an open sew activity geared towards costumes from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 26. Bring your materials and half-finished costumes to the Turlock Library Maker Space and use one of our sewing machines instead! Or try out our serger to hem that cape nice and even. The library has a limited number of machines available on a first-come, first-served basis. Must be able to use a sewing machine independently. Bring your own fabric and notions; only sewing machines, a serger, irons, and scissors will be available.

The T(w)een Tuesday activity for 4 p.m. Oct. 29 will be about pumpkins. Participants can come to the Turlock Maker Space for pumpkin painting fun. Materials will be provided. This program is designed for ages 9 and up. At the same time, children ages 8 and under can also get a small pumpkin to decorate however they like. Materials will be provided while supplies last. Children under 4 must have direct supervision from parents or adult guardians.
