The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Sacramento branch is currently taking applications from high school juniors for their Spring 2016 Sacramento FBI Teen Academy.
The Spring 2016 Sacramento FBI Teen Academy will occur March 18, at FBI Sacramento field office headquarters in North Sacramento. A limited number of applicants will spend an informative, interactive day at the FBI’s Sacramento field office headquarters. Prior classes engaged in classroom discussions offering insight into a number of topics and specialties such as the importance of making good choices when using online communication platforms, the difference between freedom of speech and violation of federal law, what is required of all FBI applicants, the FBI’s domestic and international roles, and discussions about adjudicated cases. Hands-on experiences involving the evidence response team, bomb techs, and auto shop also offered students the opportunity to learn about a limited number of FBI tools and techniques firsthand. After completing the class, students are more aware of challenges their communities face, know the challenges of the online environment, better understand how the FBI serves their communities, and are better prepared to mentor their peers.
Application packages are currently available on the “In Your Community” page of the FBI’s Sacramento field office website. Any high school junior attending a public, private, charter, or home school may apply by the deadline, Feb. 12, for consideration. Applicants need not be interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement or have prior experience in a law or law enforcement academy. Completed applications include three elements: application, essay detailing why the student wants to attend, and what benefit attendance may have for the student’s school and/or community, and release form.
The FBI Teen Academy program is a no-cost experience, however, families are responsible for any necessary transportation and any overnight, if such are necessary to attend the class. The Sacramento FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association generously sponsors lunch, morning and afternoon snacks, and other items for all students in attendance.
