Family, friends, classmates and teammates are mourning the death of a Dutcher Middle School student killed while visiting family in Mexico.

Ivan Magallon, 13, died on April 23, in what has been described as a random act of violence.

Magallon was a student at Dutcher Middle School, where he was remembered for his big smile, love of sports, and his general good humor.

“Our campus mourns the passing of Ivan Magallon,” Dutcher Middle School wrote on their Facebook page. “He is remembered for his big smile, joyful personality, and love of sports. Our sincere condolences and thoughts go out to the family and friends of Ivan. We are thankful to Jessica’s House and TUSD schools for their support during this difficult time. Ivan will be greatly missed.”

Magallon played baseball for the Turlock National Little League, which is planning something to memorialize their fallen player.

“Ivan our friend you will be missed. Your smile lit up our field, your laughter lit up your team, your attitude lit up the stands and we know your soul is lighting up the heavens,” wrote Turlock National Little League President Michele Helwick. “The Giants will play the rest of this season in your honor! Thank you for blessing us by knowing you! On behalf of Turlock National Little League I am honored to have met and known you young man!”

Helwick is helping collect funds for Magallon’s family to help with expenses. Those interested in donating can email her at president@tnllbaseball.com.
