Comic book and popular culture fans have something to celebrate as the Ohana Comic Con will return to Turlock.
The Turlock comic con is set for Sept. 6. The event will be held at the Turlock fairgrounds in building E2 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Fans of “Star Wars” and “Power Rangers” are not going to want to miss this, because there will be a white Power Ranger and Darth Vader to take pictures and sign autographs. There will also be a cosplay show, which is the highlight of the event for a lot of people, according to organizer, Ziggy Star.
“It’s a fun day for all the kids. With everyone being at home last year, anime has become even bigger than it already was,” he said.
The fun is not only for the kids, parents get just as excited for the event as their little ones do, said Star.
“I think every parent like to see their kid happy, so seeing their child happy makes the parent happy. And we also have a lot of parents that like to dress up, it’s fun for the entire family,” said Star.
The pandemic has affected turnout recently, compared to past years, but there is still expected to hundreds of people at the Turlock event.
“The first year we had 2,500 people, which was really exciting. We managed to maintain a pretty good turnout, but last year it was cut in half because of COVID, we had between 500 and 700 people,” Star said. “I’m happy this gives kids a reason to be outside and do stuff.”
Guests are going to required to wear masks and Star “wants everyone to be safe while having a lot of fun.”
Coming to Comic Con in costume is a huge draw for many fans. Star said that while “Star Wars” is still popular with kids today, Marvel characters are most seen at these events.
“Last year we had a lot of Black Panther. Now it’s really whatever the new Marvel movie is, is what’s most popular with the kids. I’m not sure what it is this year, but I’m sure whatever the newest Marvel movie was is going to be the most popular costume,” said Star.
With “Black Widow” coming out recently and a new Spiderman movie on its way, those are sure to be some popular picks for costumes this year.
Comic Con also allows people to have fun with their neighbors and share a passion that they didn’t know existed, said Star.
“I can’t tell you how many times I see people turn around and see their neighbor and be like ‘Hey, I didn’t know you were a nerd like me,’” said Star.
