All creatures big and small, of all faiths and feathers, are invited to Light of Christ Lutheran Church this Sunday for the annual Blessing of the Animals.
Light of Christ Lutheran and St. Francis Episcopal Church will hold their 3rd consecutive yearly tradition that honors St. Francis and his love for all creatures while giving thanks to the pets for their service and companionship. Cats, goats, and dogs are all welcome to this year’s blessing.
“We will be going to each animal individually and provide a prayer to them,” said Pastor of Light of Christ Lutheran Silvia Mueller. “We encourage community members and any type of animal to come to this year’s service. So if your pet has fur, feathers, fins or scales, it is welcome at the blessing, which will be followed by a drop-in social hour. Pets should be on leashes or in carriers.”
Directly after service, there will be prizes and treats for the animals — and human treats, too.
“The churches will also be accepting donations of cash and pet-related items to benefit The Friends of Turlock Animal Shelter,” said Mueller. “We ask community members that if they have an extra blanket or toy to spare, to please help donate for the cause. Monetary donations will also be accepted.”
In honor of St. Francis of Assisi and his advocacy of animals and peace, both churches hope to connect with community members who have love and affection for their pet.
“I have a four-legged daughter who is a caring for God’s creation,” said Mueller. “Our pets are an essential part of our lives because they are our companions, and for that reason they deserve to be recognized.”
The event will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 4510 Crowell Rd., Turlock.
