Spring of 2019 will be a celebration of pastels at the Carnegie Arts Center when the gallery opens the exhibit “The Fine Art of Pastels.”
The juried exhibit is currently seeking submissions of the art medium.
The pastel medium is similar to drawing, but the end results are as vibrant as paintings. A pastel is pure pigment and binder in the form of a stick, resembling something like colored chalk or an oversized crayon. The medium doesn’t refer to particular hues of color.
“‘The Fine Art of Pastels’ is a juried exhibition meant to highlight both the demanding technical aspects and the lively spirit inherent in this popular medium,” the Carnegie Arts Center stated in a news release announcing the show.
The Carnegie will accept submissions from throughout the United States. More than 60 works will be selected for the show. Submissions must be received by Feb. 3, 2019. The show will open March 27 and continue through May 26.
The Carnegie Arts Center will award $800 for the entry awarded Best in Show. Two Awards of Excellence at $400 each and two Awards of Merit at $200 each will also be distributed.
The show will be juried by pastel artist Terri Ford. Ford is an alumnus of the Academy of Art College and has been working with pastels since 1987.
Ford's pastels have been featured in American Art Collector, American Artist, Fine Art Connoisseur, Pratique des Arts and in several coffee table books. She has exhibited her works around the world and has won a multitude of awards.
Ford is a Master Pastelist with The Pastel Society of America and "Distinguished Pastelist" with the Pastel Society of the West Coast and Pastel Society of New Mexico, and an artist member of the California Art Club. She was the "Invitee de Honor" of the Art du Pastel France in 2017.
For a work to be considered for the exhibit it must be at least 50 percent pastel. Oil pastel, soft pastel and hard pastel are all acceptable. There are no size restrictions.
A non-refundable entry fee of $15 is required for the first entry, and $10 for each additional entry for members of the CAC; $20 for the first entry, $15 for each additional entry for non-members. Each artist may enter up to five works. Members should use the promo code CAC when submitting payment for entries. Membership status will be verified before works can be accepted.
