Turlock’s Carnegie Arts Center will kick off a summer full of fun and creativity in June with a fresh set of banners for the Downtown Turlock light poles.
The CAC is seeking artwork created by youth ages 4-18 on theme of “America the Beautiful” – highlighting the land and people of our country. Banner designs might show the unique landscapes that are special to the USA, or artists could choose to illustrate the great things we love about our fellow Americans. Designs can also represent the ideas that make America beautiful.
CAC Director, Lisa McDermott says, “The Downtown Banners have been such a hit for four years now, we decided to offer this fun opportunity again. We chose to highlight the upcoming celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with a patriotic theme this year. Working with the Downtown Association, we are planning to have the new banners on display for the Fourth of July celebrations Downtown.”
A committee will select at least 20 winners whose artwork will be printed on street banners that will be displayed on light poles throughout Downtown Turlock through the summer and fall. Artwork will be judged for creativity, response to the theme, and technique or skill (relative to age).
McDermott tells aspiring artists, “Your designs can be realistic or abstract, and made with any drawing or painting medium. Remember, it should be colorful and bold enough to get attention from people walking and driving through Downtown.”
Artwork must be in a vertical format on paper that is 14 x 8 ½” (legal size). The CAC will supply paper to any young artist who needs the correct size. Just come by the Arts Center and ask.
Download an entry form off the CAC website or pick one up in person at the CAC. Artists should deliver their original artwork with a completed entry form to the CAC at 250 N. Broadway in Turlock. Entries must be received by May 24. The CAC is openTuesday- Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
McDermott added, “All of the original entries for the banner contest will be included in the annual Ready, Set, Show! Youth Art Exhibition in June 2025. We want to share with everyone all the creative ideas and images that were submitted.”
