It’s time for chess enthusiasts of all ages to tighten up their skills as Turlock’s annual chess competition is fast approaching.
On April 20, the Turlock High School Chess Club will host the third ever Turlock Community Chess Tournament. The event format will be G/30, Swiss play. In other words, it will be just friendly competition inside the Turlock High cafeteria.
The community chess tournament has grown exponentially in each of its three years of existence. In its first year in 2022, there was a turnout of about 30 players. Last year, that number grew to 83 participants.
“We hope that it will be even bigger this year,” said club advisor Matt Rosengarth.
Because of the rapid growth in popularity in the local tournament, space will be limited this time around. There will be five divisions based on grades/age, with each limited to 32 players. Space will be filled on a first come, first serve basis, so anybody who is interested is encouraged to sign up as soon as possible at https://forms.gle/B967p2zZM12BAMYc7.
Additionally, due to the expected large turnout, extra boards, pieces and clocks may be needed.
The tournament will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a one hour lunch break in between. Check-ins will take place that morning from 7:30 to 8.
The price of registration for children in grades one through 12 is $5, while there is a $10 fee for adults. The entry fees can be paid using exact cash or with card in advance at the Turlock High Activities Office. Day-of payment will also be accepted, though only cash will be accepted.
