An intruder broke into a Turlock home and stabbed a man multiple times as his 1-year-old child and girlfriend slept next to him.
The child and the girlfriend were not injured in the attack and the victim is expected to survive, said Turlock Police Sgt. Russ Holeman.
The suspect was apprehended shortly after the attack and was still in possession of the knife, Holeman said. The suspect was identified as Alvino Alaniz, 31, of Turlock. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide, willful child endangerment and burglary.
The incident was reported to the police department around 3 a.m. Tuesday at a home in the 1200 block of Milhous Street.
The victim, a 34-year-old man, was asleep in his bed with his 1-year-old child and girlfriend. A 3-year-old child was asleep in another room.
Alaniz reportedly kicked down a door to get into the house and burst into the bedroom, where he began stabbing the victim. The victim was able to fight him off and ran out of the house and to a neighbor’s home, where emergency personnel were called, Holeman said.
Officers responding to the area spotted Alaniz in the area of Del’s Lane and W. Tuolumne Road and captured him after a brief foot pursuit. Alaniz was in possession of a hunting-style knife that was used in the attack, Holeman said.
Alaniz is the ex-boyfriend of the victim’s girlfriend, Holeman said.
The victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. Since then, his condition has improved, Holeman said.
Alaniz is currently being held at the Stanislaus County Jail in lieu of a $500,000 bail.
