A 21-year-old Turlock man is facing criminal charges after allegedly scheming to have sex with a 13-year-old girl, according to the Turlock Police Department. Investigators suspect there could be other victims yet to come forward.

On Aug. 31, the police department initiated an investigation into the actions of Santiago Cornejo, 21, of Turlock after learning he had been engaging in “inappropriate interactions” with a 13-year-old girl for two weeks, said Turlock Police spokeswoman Dominique Sanchez.

The police learned Cornejo met the minor at a gas station in Denair and maintained contact through Snapchat, including occasional in-person meetings.

“The responding officer acted swiftly, gathering crucial witness statements and evidence, which suggest there may be additional underage victims,” Sanchez said in a press release.
Detectives took over the case and contacted Cornejo on Sept. 5 at his residence. Cornejo was transported to the Turlock Police Department where he was arrested for three counts of lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 and three counts of arranging a meeting with a minor under the age of 18 with intent to engage in sexual conduct.
With the possibility of more underage victims, detectives are calling on anyone with information to come forward and report these serious matters.
“The Turlock Police Department remains steadfast in our fight against child exploitation and is dedicated to protecting the safety and wellbeing of children in Turlock and the surrounding communities,” said Detective Gina Giovacchini. “Ensuring the safety of our youth from predators is our top priority.”
