Turlock man arrested for attempted kidnapping of toddler

A Turlock man was arrested Friday on allegations he tried to snatch a toddler away from the mother, the Turlock Police reported.

The suspect was identified as Alex Lopez, 45, of Turlock. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted kidnapping, child abuse, and assault & battery, said Turlock Police spokeswoman Dominique Sanchez.

The victim in the case was a 2-year-old child.

On Aug. 24, the mother of the 2-year-old was walking with her three children toward a bus stop near Broadway and A Street. As they passed by a beige Toyota Corolla a man reached out and grabbed the 2-year-old by the arm.

The mother “was able to quickly move the victim from the subject,” Sanchez said.

The woman did not contact the police department about the incident.

The following day, the woman saw the man drive by her residence, which was near the initial encounter, and she decided to contact authorities.

As officers were speaking with the parents, the same man, later identified as Lopez, drove by again.

Officers conducted a traffic stop and took Lopez into custody.

Lopez did not have any connections with the child, Sanchez said.
