A volatile verbal exchange between two men over some sort of traffic incident at a Turlock apartment complex escalated into a violent attack that left one man dead at a nearby convenience store, the Turlock Police Department reported.

The deceased was identified by the police department as Enrique Gomez, 49, of Turlock.

The incident began with a brief verbal altercation related to road rage at a nearby apartment complex. The confrontation escalated to a physical altercation, culminating in the stabbing.

The police department received a report of the stabbing at 10:30 p.m. Friday from the Quik Stop at 2406 W. Monte Vista Avenue.

The first officers to arrive found Gomez on the ground suffering from at least one stab wound and began administering first aid.  Despite their efforts, and those of Turlock Fire and Patterson District Ambulance, Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives were called to the scene and began gathering evidence and speaking to witnesses, which is how they learned of the road rage incident.

Detectives quickly identified the suspect vehicle and the individual involved. Utilizing License Plate Reader technology and collaborating with the Modesto Police Department, detectives were able to locate and arrest 28-year-old Ahmad Abweny of Modesto just hours after the incident.

“The use of license plate reader technology allowed our detectives to quickly piece together critical evidence and apprehend the suspect,” said Turlock Police Chief Jason Hedden. “This case demonstrates the power of modern technology in enhancing public safety and ensuring prompt resolution for any crime committed in our city.”

Abweny has been booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of murder.

“The Turlock Police Department extends its gratitude to the Modesto Police Department for their crucial assistance during the investigation,” the department said in a news release.
