An 18-year-old was jailed Saturday night after he was caught doing “doughnuts” in a crowded parking lot and almost hit several people in his attempt to avoid arrest, according to the Turlock Police Department.
Shortly after midnight Saturday the police department received several reports of street racers gathering in the parking lot at Countryside Drive and Monte Vista Avenue.
The first officer to arrive found a driver, later identified as Oscar Martinez, spinning his vehicle in circles in the parking lot, which was full of pedestrians, according to the police department.
The officer attempted to stop Martinez, but he sped away through the parking lot, weaving in and out of the crowds before he finally came to a stop. Turlock Police spokesperson Officer Mayra Lewis said Martinez narrowly avoided hitting several people in his attempt to flee.
Martinez was booked into Stanislaus County Jail on charges of felony evading and reckless driving.
