Police arrest Turlock shooting suspect with help from license plate reader tech
TPD

Turlock police officers used the city’s new license plate reader technology to arrest a shooting suspect hours after the incident.

Turlock Police received a call at approximately 3:33 a.m. Tuesday reporting a man had been shot in the 1800 block of Lander Avenue. Officers arrived on the scene and found Jose Tamayo-Morales, 18, of Modesto, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. An officer began performing CPR, but despite lifesaving efforts, Tamayo-Morales was pronounced dead at the scene.

Turlock Police detectives took over the investigation and determined that the shooting resulted from an altercation between the victim and suspect. Thanks to witness statements and physical evidence, detectives were able to identify the suspect vehicle and the individual involved. Using license plate reader technology and collaborating with the Modesto Police Department and Ceres Police Department, they tracked down and arrested 59-year-old Troy Cannon, also of Modesto, just hours after the incident. Cannon has been booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of murder.

“With the aid of license plate reader technology, our detectives were able to swiftly gather critical information and locate the suspect,” said Chief Jason Hedden. “This case serves as a powerful reminder of how technology is reshaping law enforcement, helping us protect the public and resolve cases more quickly.”
