An 18-year-old Atwater man who engaged in two separate high-speed pursuits with law enforcement officers came to end with his arrest in Keyes on Saturday evening.

Assisting in tracking Adrian Lopez, the rider of a sport motorcycle, were deputies of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department on the road and in the helicopter.

The first pursuit began on Beachwood Drive in Merced when he was seen speeding at 90 mph in a 55 mph zone. Lopez refused to pull over and led the California Highway Patrol on a 37-mile pursuit that reached speeds of 130 mph. That chase ended when officers lost sight of Lopez in Madera County.

Approximately an hour later, another officer spotted a motorcycle matching Lopez’s description on State Route 59. The second pursuit covered 39 miles, with speeds reaching 150 mph. At one point a pursuing CHP cruiser experienced a flat tire and had to drop out of the pursuit but others joined in.

The suspect was boxed in and arrested on N. Golden State Boulevard just outside of the Keyes Truck Center in Keyes.

Lopez faces two felony counts of evading a peace officer.

The CHP said high-speed chases pose significant dangers to officers and the public as well as lead to serious legal consequences for the suspect.
