Highway pursuit ends with crash in Turlock
crash
A Modesto man fleeing deputies overturned his pickup truck down the embankment of the W. Monte Vista Avenue exit off southbound Highway 99.

A vehicle pursuit that started in Modesto came to an abrupt end in Turlock when the 19-year-old driver lost control of the pickup and rolled down an embankment off the highway.

Around 10 p.m. on Oct. 30, Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputies initiated a traffic stop on a red truck driving recklessly near the intersection of Chicago and Vernon avenues in Modesto. The vehicle's driver was later identified as Sergio Lopez, 19, of Modesto.

Lopez failed to yield and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. Lopez fled from deputies, driving towards downtown Modesto and entering Highway 99.

Lopez sped south on the highway at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour, according to the sheriff’s department.

The Sheriff's Department Air Unit was able to begin monitoring Lopez from above as he continued driving southbound on Highway 99 toward Turlock at a high rate of speed.

Once in Turlock, Lopez attempted to take the W. Monte Vista Avenue exit but was traveling too fast and lost control of the pickup truck. The truck overturned down the embankment.

Lopez exited the wrecked car and was taken into custody. No other motorists were involved in the collision.

Lopez was transported to Doctor's Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released for booking at the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center. Lopez was booked for several violations: driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, felony evading, probation violation, and reckless driving.
