The Turlock Police Department is continuing its investigation into the discovery of two handguns near Dutcher Middle School on Monday.

One of the guns was accidentally discharged as it was being retrieved by a Turlock Unified School District maintenance worker. No injuries were reported.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. Monday, a pile of blankets and a jacket were noticed near the school’s fence line — neighboring an apartment complex — where electrical equipment is housed, and is inaccessible to students. While the maintenance worker was attempting to clear the space with the use of a pole, one of the guns discharged accidentally.

The Turlock Police Department was immediately notified. Five officers and a lieutenant arrived at the campus within minutes to secure the area and begin the investigation. A school resource officer also responded, according to a TPD statement.

The items were collected without further incident, and booked into evidence.

A Turlock police officer remained on campus for the remainder of the school day as a precaution.

It remains unclear who owns the guns, who put them there, how long they had been there, or how the area was accessed. Surveillance footage is being reviewed to determine a timeline.

“We absolutely understand the concern from parents and the community when it comes to incidents involving schools and student safety,” Turlock PD said in a statement issued by public affairs analyst Dominique Sanchez. “It’s important to clarify that Turlock Unified School District notified families about an hour after the incident occurred, which was appropriate given the circumstances and their direct role in school communication.

“From the police department’s side, our immediate priority was to respond swiftly, secure the area, and begin our investigation. We released a statement later in the day to provide the community with accurate, confirmed details — while being careful not to speculate on elements of the case that are still under active investigation.

“We recognize how important timely and transparent communication is, especially in incidents involving schools, and we appreciate the community’s understanding as we continue working closely with the district to ensure safety and accountability.”
