A grass fire that sparked along Highway 99 on Monday sent flames toward a neighboring building before firefighters could reign in the flames.
The fire started along the southbound lanes of Highway 99 and spread to a building located in the 1000 block of S. Walnut Road, according to the Turlock Fire Department.
The flames had reached the exterior of the commercial business, but the firefighters were able to stop them from getting to the interior of the building.
Due to high winds, the grass fire on the southbound shoulder spread to the northbound shoulder of the highway, said Turlock Fire Capt. Jason Bernard.
Crews we on scene for an extended period of time extinguishing the fire.
Through the county resource partners the Turlock Fire Department received three additional engines, one quint, and one battalion chief.  Two of those engines covered the city during the fire.  Additionally Turlock Rural Fire Department provided one engine to the fire.  There were also three chief officers on scene to assist in command.

The fire is currently under investigation by the Stanislaus Fire Investigation Unit. Anyone with information on the fire can contact them at (209) 525-5537.
