A Delhi mother and her boyfriend are headed to prison for their role in the death of a 2-year girl.
Kalena Marie Olson, 25, and Sergio Angel Zamora, 26, both of Delhi were sentenced to 13 years each earlier this week in Merced County Superior Court. The sentence was part of a plea deal arranged for the death of 2-year-old Hennessy Fagin.
In December 2016, Olson and Zamora entered no contest pleas to charges of child abuse and causing great bodily injury or death to a child for Fagin and child abuse for the treatment of Olson’s other daughter.
Merced County Sheriff’s detectives stated the toddler died in April 2014, from injuries she had sustained over an ongoing period of physical abuse and that her 3-year-old sister had suffered the same abuse.
Merced County Pathologist Dr. Mark A. Super deemed the cause of death as sudden unexplained death that was likely subsequent to asphyxia. Super stated the child’s sudden death “paints a picture of a battered child, who’s brain was deprived of oxygen.” The injuries were similar to those of suffocation.
As part of the plea deal the sentence cannot be appealed.
