A call of a suspicious incident at a Turlock park led to the arrest of a convicted felon who was carrying a loaded firearm, the Turlock Police Department reported.
Around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Turlock Police Officers Khounlivong and Ruiz were dispatched to investigate a disturbance in progress at Columbia Park. The caller reported a man yelling that he was going to “shoot up everyone” at the park.
Officer Khounlivong was the first to arrive on the scene and quickly located a person matching the description, later identified as Michael Thompson, 48, of Turlock.
Khounlivong was attempting to get a statement from Thompson when Thompson decided he was going to leave and began quickly walking away from the officer.
Khounlivong ordered Thompson to stop, but he ignored his orders and the officer had to tackle him to the ground.
Officer Ruiz was the second officer on scene and noticed a firearm in the Thompson’s pocket while Khounlivong was restraining him. The firearm was found to be loaded.
Thompson, who has a prior conviction for manslaughter, was booked into jail on a range of charges, including resisting arrest and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
“Great job to Officers Khounlivong and Ruiz for their swift response and apprehension of the suspect, and to the vigilant caller who reported the situation,” the police department posted on their Facebook page. “This is a strong reminder: if you see something, say something.”
