Merced College’s Theatre Department will hold open auditions for Green Day's “American Idiot” from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the College Theater.
Theatre professor Carin Heidelbach describes “American Idiot” as “a punk rock opera” that became an unexpected Broadway hit musical. With music derived from Green Day’s 2004 album of the same name and reflective of its angst and passions, the musical tells the story of Johnny, Will and Tunny, three young men from the suburbs adapting to adult life in post-9/11 America.
Roles are open to students and community members, Heidelbach said. Additional dance auditions will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Callbacks, if necessary, will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday. The first rehearsal will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 2.
“For the singing audition we’re asking that singers prepare 32 bars of a song that is appropriate to the style of rock opera,” Heidelbach said. “Bring sheet music, marked with any cuts. An accompanist will be provided. You may bring recorded accompaniment if you would prefer, but you will be asked to sing something with the accompanist as well.” Rock songs are acceptable, she said.
For dance auditions Heidelbach suggests wearing comfortable clothing and appropriate shoes, such as Converse Chuck Taylors or even combat boots.
